DEVARIM (DEUTERONOMY) 32:1 – 32:52 – HA’AZINU – GIVE EAR

This Torah portion is called – הַאֲזִינוּ – ‘ha’azinu’ – rendering the phrase ‘give ear’, which comes from the primitive root verb אָזַןazan’ – H238 which means, to give ear, listen, pay attention, pierced by ear, to be obedient and listen and here it is written in the ‘hiphil form’ which renders a causative action of the ‘qal’ verb form; and can also be translated as ‘cup the ear’, giving us the clear picture of the giving of ones ear totally to the one speaking.

This chapter presents a song which Mosheh was commanded to teach the children of Yisra’ĕl; and so, as we see at the end of Chapter 31, we are told that Mosheh spoke these words in the hearing of ALL the assembly of Yisra’ĕl – the entire song until its completion! The reason for this song, that was to be heard by all and remembered, and was to be in the mouths of all, was so that this song would be to יהוה a witness against the children of Yisra’ĕl!!! A very sobering thought indeed as we take note that this song would witness against them when they would turn away from Elohim and serve the foreign mighty ones of Kenaʽan. As we go through the words of this song, we are able to glean much insight and understanding, so that we too can and should learn this song, in a sense, in order that we are to be continually reminded to keep our eyes fixed on יהוה and not fall into the same errors that our forefathers did!

Verse 1

The opening statement of this song is a clear call that is set before us all, showing us very clearly that the heavens and the earth are 2 permanent witnesses to יהוה and His Torah!

The term “the heavens” is written in Hebrew as הַשָּׁמַיִם – ‘ha shamayim’ – where we see the letter ‘hey’ – ‘הַ’ being used as a ‘definite article’ which is rendered in English as ‘the’ or in this case translated a, ‘O’, yet still rendering the definite article; and the word שָׁמַיִם shamayim – Strong’s H8064 means, heavens, skies.

The term the earth’ is written in Hebrew as הָאָרֶץ – ‘ha arets’ – where we see the letter ‘hey’ – ‘הַ’ being used as a definitive article along with the the primitive root אֶרֶץ erets – Strong’s H776 which means, earth, land, ground’.

What we can clearly see here, as I have already mentioned, is that by calling for the heavens and the earth to hear, we take note that these two are the two consistent and permanent witnesses given for all generations. These are permanent witnesses to the words of יהוה, and therefore by these two unchangeable witnesses, we see how the Word of Elohim stands firm and established for the full ‘week’ of the Creation account and therefore it is established for the full 7000 year plan of יהוה; after which a renewed heavens and earth will be brought forth – however until then His Torah is established and shall not be set aside at all until all has passed away.

The phrase ‘and let me speak’ in the Hebrew is – וַאֲדַבֵּרָה – ‘vaaḏabera’ and can also be translated as, ‘and I will speak’ and comes from the primitive root - דָּבַר daḇar – Strong’s H1696 meaning, ‘to speak, command, counsel, declare, proclaimed, converse, warn, threaten, promise’ and a derivative of this word is also translated as ‘speech, word, commandment/s, message’.

The Hebrew word used here for ‘hear’ is שָׁמַע shama – Strong’s H8085 which carries the meaning not just simply to hear, but rather to ‘listen with attention, comprehend and discern, give heed to what is being spoken’.

The root word used in this verse for ‘words’ is אֵמֶר emer – Strong’s H561 which means, speech, word, command, decreed, sayings, utterances and comes from the primitive root verb אָמַר  amar – Strong’s H559 which means, utter, say, speak, commanded, give an order, declared.  

So as we begin this ‘song’ we recognise that this is not just any old song, but rather a very important one that was being presented in the hearing of all. Songs have a way of helping us remember words and this one is no different; yet the structure of this song is done in a covenantal form, as many legal documents are done today – by presenting straight up the witnesses to the words being spoken, from originator of the Covenant to the recipients of the Covenant; and it is presented by Mosheh, the ‘mediator’, which shadow pictures for us Messiah, our intercessor who establishes these words as true and binding forever! Therefore we can see straight away that this song is a very legitimate document in itself, as Mosheh calls witnesses to what he is about to say – which is the common practice done when producing and establishing a covenant or binding agreement or contract; and we see other examples of this in:

Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 4:26I shall call the heavens and earth to witness against you on that day, that you soon completely perish from the land which you pass over the Yardĕn to possess – you do not prolong your days in it but are completely destroyed.

Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 30:19I have called the heavens and the earth as witnesses today against you: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore you shall choose life, so that you live, both you and your seed

Later on in the prophets we see these permanent witnesses (heaven and earth) being called to witness against the rebellious nation who forsake the Covenants of Promise:

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 2:12-13 “Be amazed, O heavens, at this, and be frightened, be utterly dried up,” declares יהוה. 13 “For My people have done two evils: they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, to hew out for themselves cisterns, cracked cisterns, which do not hold water.

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 6:19 “Hear, O earth! See, I am bringing evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not listened to My words, nor My Torah – and they rejected it.

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 22:9 “O land, land, land! Hear the word of יהוה!

Miḵah/Micah 1:2Hear, all you peoples! Listen, O earth, and all who are in it! And let the Master יהוה be a witness against you – יהוה from His set-apart Hěḵal.

 

We see very similar words of יהוה being spoken by the prophet Yeshayahu, which would have been very familiar to Yisra’ĕl in calling them back to the Covenant and being reminded of this song that Mosheh taught Yisra’ĕl, in:

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 1:2 “Hear, O heavens, and listen, O earth! For יהוה has spoken, “I have reared and brought up children, but they have transgressed against Me.

The song of Mosheh was to be passed down from generation to generation, and these clear words spoken through Yeshayahu would have been a clear witness against a rebellious nation, calling them to repent and return to יהוה.

Yeshayahu is such a powerful book that is so relevant to us all today – It clearly pictures for us the need to embrace the Saving Favour of יהוה, and his name defines this for us – Yeshayahu יְשַׁעְיָהוּ – which means ‘salvation of Yah/ Yahweh saves’. We will do well to heed the prophetic words of Yeshayahu/Isaiah, as the call to live set-apart lives and walk in the light of יהושע is being proclaimed louder and louder! The question of choice remains: ‘who will hear and who is dull of hearing?’

This first chapter in Yeshayahu speaks of the urgency and need to hear the Word of יהוה, and walk in the Torah (His instructions for righteous living). The vision and call given by יהוה to Yeshayahu to speak, was not only to Yehuḏah, but to יהוה’s entire Bride and carries much power and significance today, as Ephrayim (lost 10 tribes) hears this call and returns; and as one goes through Yeshayahu/Isaiah chapter 1; and understands the Hebrew words, a better understanding of this text is gained and is clearly seen how alive it is for us today!

At this point in Yeshayahu/Isaiah 1, Yisra’ĕl (northern 10 tribes) had already been scattered, yet to return, and Yehuḏah had committed whoring just as her sister Yisra’ĕl had, and in many ways they were in fact worse and here comes the call to listen up from יהוה.

The terms used here in regards to heaven and earth were once again a reminder of the Covenant and the two witnesses of heaven and earth as life and death were set before them, for which He encourages His Covenanted called out ones to choose life!!! This was a reality check to the nation once again that יהוה’s Covenant is still in effect and always is; and He never operates outside of His Covenant; and rebellion to that Covenant will result in death, obedience to it – life of which heaven and earth are faithful witnesses to! יהוה had rose up a nation and taught them His ways and as stubborn rebellious children they have sinned against the Marriage Covenant

Verse 2

Key Hebrew words in this verse:

The root word translated as ‘instruction’ is לֶקַח leqaḥ – Strong’s H3948 which means, a learning, teaching, instruction, persuasions, and comes from the root verb לָקַח laqaḥ - Strong’s H3947 which carries the meaning, take, fetch, lay hold of, seize, snatch away, take away, lead. This is a powerful picture for us in recognising how it is by the instructions of יהוה that we are equipped and prepared for Him to come and fetch us as a ready Bride. לָקַח laqaḥ is also translated or understood as being ‘married’, in the sense of a Husband ‘taking up’ His Bride:

Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 24:1When a man takes a wife and shall marry her, then it shall be, if she finds no favour in his eyes because he has found a matter of uncoveredness in her, and he shall write her a certificate of divorce, and put it in her hand, and send her out of his house

Bemiḏbar/Numbers 12:1 “Now Miryam and Aharon spoke against Mosheh because of the Kushite woman whom he had taken, for he had taken a Kushite woman.

As we listen to and follow the clear ‘instructions’ of יהוה as given in His Torah, we make ourselves ready for the soon return of our Husband and Kinsman Redeemer:

Tehillah/Psalm 73:24 “You lead me by Your counsel, and afterward receive me unto esteem.

The Hebrew root word translated as ‘speech’ is אִמְרָה imrah – Strong’s H565 and means, utterance, speech, command, and this word is predominantly used in Scripture in reference to the Word of יהוה:

Tehillah/Psalm 12:6 “The Words of יהוה are clean Words, silver tried in a furnace of earth, refined seven times.

Tehillah/Psalm 18:30 “The Ěl – His way is perfect; the Word of יהוה is proven; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.

Tehillah/Psalm 119:140 “Your word is tried, exceedingly; and Your servant has loved it.

His ‘instructions and commands’ – that is His Word – falls down as rain and drop down as dew!

His word must ‘sink in’ like dew settles on the ground and saturates the ground completely!

The word for ‘drop down’ is נָזַל nazal – Strong’s H5140 meaning, to flow, trickle, drop, distil and the Hebrew word for ‘dew’ is טַל tal – Strong’s H2919 which means, night mist, dew’! What is a great picture for us in this regard is how, in the Wilderness, the morning dew was accompanied with the ‘manna’ and remained when the dew had vanished! His ‘manna’ (Word) came down as ‘dew’, and was available for all!

Figuratively, the favour/delight of יהוה, His speech and the blessing of the unity of the brethren are likened or compared to the fall of dew:

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 19:12The sovereign’s wrath is like the roaring of a lion, but his delight is like dew on the grass.

Tehillah/Psalm 133:3 “Like the dew of Ḥermon, that comes down on the mountains of Tsiyon. For there יהוה commanded the blessing, life forever!

יהוה’s watching over us is like a cloud of dew that refreshes in the heat of the harvest:

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 18:4 “For thus יהוה said to me, “I am still, and I watch in My dwelling place like dazzling heat in sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.

 

We also see in Scripture how unfaithfulness is likened to ‘dew’ that goes away early:

Hoshěa/Hosea 6:4Ephrayim, what would I do with you? Yehuḏah, what would I do with you? For your trustworthiness is like a morning cloud, and like the early dew it goes away.

Hoshěa/Hosea 13:3Therefore they shall be like a morning cloud, and like dew that goes away early, like chaff blown off from a threshing-floor, and like smoke from a window.

 

His ‘dew’ has fallen – the question is whether we are obedient enough to allow it to nourish us or neglect it and rebel!

As fine rain on the tender plants and as showers on the grass! Fine rain and showers:

The word used for ‘fine rain’ is שָׂעִיר sa’iyr – Strong’s H8164 which means, rain drops, light showers, and the word used for ‘showers’ is רְבִיבִים reḇiḇim – Strong’s H7241 meaning, abundant showers and comes from the primitive root רָבַב raḇaḇ – Strong’s H7231 which means, to be or become much or many, abound, increase.

We see the similar language being used of the remnant of Ya’aqoḇ, in:

Miḵah/Micah 5:7And the remnant of Ya’aqoḇ shall be in the midst of many peoples, as dew from יהוה, as showers on the grass, which do not wait for man nor delay for the sons of men.

 

The word used for ‘rain’ is מָטָר matar – Strong’s H4306 which means, rain, downpour; and when we understand the clear terminology being used here in this song of Mosheh, we are able to connect this with other prophetic shadow pictures of the two comings of Messiah that is clearly being spoken of here. The instructions of יהוה shall come down like rain – in other words – the ‘Teacher of righteousness’ will come down like rain in the season of the harvests!

 

Yo’ĕl/Joel 2:23And you children of Tsiyon, be glad and rejoice in יהוה your Elohim, for He shall give you the Teacher of Righteousness, and cause the rain to come down for you, the former rain and the latter rain, as before.

Zeḵaryah/Zechariah 10:1Ask יהוה for rain in the time of the latter rain, יהוה who makes storm clouds. And He gives them showers of rain, the plants in the field to everyone.

 

As we consider both ‘dew’ and ‘rain’ we can see how both can have a very powerful effect on both those who respond as well as those who do not! In one sense the ‘dew’ of יהוה can picture the gentleness of His Word that nourishes the new tender plants (new believers), and the heavy rain can be a lavishing of His Truth upon a firmly planted and established believer that can handle the capacity of the ‘more’ of His Word!!

To those who are not nourished by the daily manna that comes gently with the dew, will be at risk of being washed away when the storms come, as they are not firmly rooted upon the Rock of Messiah!

In one sense, we can liken the first coming of Messiah as the dew, by Him coming as a meek lamb; while His second coming we can see how He is coming like a mighty shower of rain, as The Lion of the Tribe of Yehuḏah! We who are fully nourished daily in Him and continue to receive the abundant teaching of the revelation of His Truth that He came to teach us by revealing His Torah through His life, death and resurrection, in order that we may walk in it, shall not be shaken at the coming heavy rains!!!

Verse 3

Proclaim the Name of יהוה!

The word translated as ‘proclaim’ is from the root word קָרָא qara – Strong’s H7121 which means, ‘to call, proclaim, read, make a proclamation, summons, read aloud, i.e., to speak aloud something, reciting what has been written down’.

What is very clear here is that Mosheh said He proclaims the Name of יהוה – in other words the Torah proclaims or speaks loudly the Name of יהוה!!! This who ‘suppress’ the Name are rendering the Torah as being ‘silent’ in their lives.

We need to ‘proclaim’ and ‘call’ on His Name, or else we cannot be delivered, as this word קָרָא qara in used in:

Yo’ĕl/Joel 2:32And it shall be that everyone who calls on the Name of יהוה shall be delivered. For on Mount Tsiyon and in Yerushalayim there shall be an escape as יהוה has said, and among the survivors whom יהוה calls.

The Name of יהוה is mentioned a little under 7000 times in the Tanak (O.T.) – and yet they managed, over the centuries, to bring his Name to naught by not speaking it, and replaced it with foreign titles and references.

What I love about this bold statement of Mosheh in this song, that we are all to learn, is that we too are to ‘proclaim’ His Name – and ascribe greatness to our Elohim!

Ascribe is the Hebrew word יָהַב yaha’ – Strong’s H3051 – and means, ‘to give, to choose’ provide, come or to ascribe or to set’.

Tehillah/Psalm 96:7-8 “Ascribe to יהוה, O clans of the peoples, ascribe to יהוה esteem and strength. 8 Ascribe to יהוה the esteem of His Name; bring an offering, and come into His courts.

We are to ‘give’ to Him our all, and ascribe to Him ALL that He is; that is to proclaim and give acknowledgement, all that is due to His Name! So when we come before Him, we are to come and ‘give to Him’ ALL excellency, splendour, strength and comeliness, as expressed through our obedient, joyful and reverent worship. He expects nothing less than what is due to Him! To ‘give or ascribe’ speaks of offering – and this we are to do as we are to be a daily living sacrifice; and we are also to be joyful in bringing an offering of praise, as we enter into His courts as a proclaiming people who acknowledge the true greatness of who He is.

In case you haven’t realised – He is the King of all creation!!! He is great and greatly to be praised! Are you praising Him for who He is – is your praise toward Him great as He is great or is it mediocre due to boredom?

There are far too many so called believers today that are sadly expressing the greatness of other people rather than that of יהוה as they very quickly applaud the success and attributes of seemingly successful people according to world’s standards and tend to lend much of their worship unto man rather than Elohim!

Verse 4

The ROCK is perfect!!!

Shemuʼěl Bět/2 Samuel 22:2And he said, “יהוה is my rock and my stronghold and my deliverer.

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 44:7-8 “And who is like Me? Let him call and declare it, and lay it before Me, since I appointed the everlasting people. And the events that are coming and those that do come, let them declare these to them. 8 ‘Do not fear, nor be afraid. Have I not since made you hear, and declared it? You are My witnesses. Is there an Eloah besides Me? There is no other Rock, I know not one.’

יהוה (Yahweh) is our ROCK – there is no other!!!

Qorintiyim Aleph/1 Corinthians 10:1-4 “For I do not wish you to be ignorant, brothers, that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were immersed into Mosheh in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed, and the Rock was Messiah.

יהושע (Yahushua) is our Rock!!!

What we must recognise very clearly here from the Torah is the proclamation of the Perfect Rock: יהושע is the Arm of יהוה - The Word made flesh – the exact representation of the substance of Elohim! יהושע is our Rock and there is no other, which clearly means that: יהושע is Elohim = He is יהוה – the One who causes us to be and is our Deliverer:

יהושע means: יהוה is Deliverance/ יהוה is our Salvation!!!

Shemuʼěl Bět/2 Samuel 22:32For who is Ěl, besides יהוה? And who is a rock, besides our Elohim?

Shemuʼěl Bět/2 Samuel 22:47יהוה lives! And blessed is my Rock! And exalted is my Elohim, The Rock of my deliverance.

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 26:4 “Trust in יהוה forever, for in Yah, יהוה, is a rock of ages.

In these above verses, as well as in Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 32:4, we see the root word for rock that is being used is the Hebrew word צוּר tsur – Strong’s H6697 which means, rock, cliff, stones, strength, block of stone, boulder’, and here in this verses from Tehillah/Psalm 18:2 we see two different Hebrew words being used for ‘rock’:

Tehillah/Psalm 18:2 “יהוה is my rock and my stronghold and my deliverer; My Ěl is my rock, I take refuge in Him; My shield and the horn of my deliverance, my high tower.

 The first word translated as ‘rock’ is the Hebrew word צוּר tsur – Strong’s H6697, while the second Hebrew word translated as ‘rock’ is from the root word סֶלַע sela – Strong’s H5553 which means, a crag, cliff, mountain, rock and also carries the figurative meaning of stronghold of  יהוה, of security. Two words that carry similar meanings, and throughout the rest of Scripture we are able to find them being used interchangeably for ‘rock’, with some verses even having both words used together, as above.

This is also the same wording of Dawiḏ we see in:

Shemuʼěl Bět/2 Samuel 22:2-3And he said, “יהוה is my rock and my stronghold and my deliverer. 3 “My Elohim is my rock, I take refuge in Him, My shield and the horn of my deliverance, My high tower and my refuge. My Saviour, You save me from violence.

The first ‘rock’ is the root word סֶלַע sela – Strong’s H5553 written as סַלְעִי sal’aiy – ‘my rock’, while the second ‘rock’ is צוּר tsur – Strong’s H6697 written as צוּרִי tsuriy – ‘my rock’.

In order to get a better understanding of why two different words are used, especially when we remember that on the two different occasions of water coming forth from The Rock in the wilderness these two words were used, we need to look at these words in their ancient pictographic form.

Let us then look at this term ‘The Rock’, when we take note that ‘the Rock’ is a clear reference and shadow picture of יהושע Messiah.

The first word used in Shemoth/Exodus 17:6 and here in Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 32:4 for ‘The Rock’ is הַצּוּר ‘hatsur’, and in the ancient pictographic script it looks like this:

Hey - הַ:

This letter is used to express ‘The’, and the original pictograph for this letter is hey, a man standing with his arms raised out. The meaning of the letter is ‘behold, look, breath, sigh and reveal or revelation’ from the idea of revealing a great sight by pointing it out. It also carries for us the meaning of surrender as we lift up our hands and submit to יהוה as we lift our hands in praise, declaring His authority under which we humbly submit!

Tsadey - צּ:

The Ancient picture for this letter is tsadey, which is ‘a man on his side’, and it can represent the act of lying on one’s side in order to hunt or chase, when crouching I concealment, as well as ‘laying one’s self down for another’. We can also see how this can represent that which comes forth from the side! This can also picture for us a fish hook, giving us the meaning of ‘hunt or fish’.

Waw/vav - וּ:

The Ancient picture for this letter is waw, is pictured as a peg or ‘tent peg’, which was used for securing or tying the tent or other items. The possibility of it having a Y-shape is to show that it prevents the rope from slipping off. The root meaning of this letter is ‘to add, secure or hook’.

Resh – ר:

The Ancient picture for this letter is resh, ‘the head of a man’. This letter has the meanings of ‘head or man’ as well as ‘chief, top, beginning or first’.

As we consider this first word used in Scripture for ‘The Rock’, when looking at the ancient pictographic letters we are able to render the following meaning when understanding that the prophetic shadow picture of Messiah, The Rock in who we find strength and Living Waters:

BEHOLD, THE ONE WHO SHALL LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR US AND SECURE FOR US THE COVENANT, IS OUR ELOHIM AND HEAD.

The second word we find being used in reference to The Rock  that was struck in the Wilderness  in Bemiḏbar/Numbers 20:8 is the word הַסֶּלַע hasela’, from the root word סֶלַע sela – Strong’s H5553, which is also used here in this ‘Song of Mosheh’ in Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 32:13. When we look at this word in the construct of who is The Rock, we see that in the ancient pictographic script הַסֶּלַע hasela’ (The Rock) looks like this:

Samek – סֶּ:

The ancient script has this letter pictured as samek, which is a thorn and has the meanings of ‘pierce and sharp’ and can also carry the meaning of ‘a shield’, as thorn bushes were used by shepherds to build a wall to enclose their flock in the night against the attack of predators. Another meaning would be ‘to grab hold of’ as a thorn is a seed that clings to hair and clothing. The Word of Elohim is sharper than a doubled edged sword and when we find that we do not grab hold of His word and allow His Word to be our shield of faith, we may find ourselves being pierced through with sin and compromise! Our praise we have for our Master is that in Him we are upheld forever, for He is the shield of our Help, as He Himself took the crown of thorns upon His head, bearing our sin and shame that we may be found to be shielded in Him!

Lamed – לַ:

The ancient script has this letter pictured as lamed,which is a ‘shepherd’s staff’, representing authority’ and can give the meaning of ‘to or toward’ and can represent that which pushes or pulls a flock in a direction, and can speak of authority or a yoke that is used to lead and guide, as well as the ability to bring back by Authority.

Ayin – ע:

the ancient script has this letter is pictured as ayin, which is ‘an eye’ and represents the idea of ‘seeing and watching’, as well as ‘knowledge’, as the eye is the window of knowledge.

As we consider this word used in Scripture for ‘The Rock’, when looking at the ancient pictographic letters we are able to render the following meaning when understanding that the prophetic shadow picture of Messiah, The Rock in who we find strength and Living Waters:

BEHOLD, THE ONE WHOM WE FIX OUR EYES UPON IS THE ONE WHO WAS PIERCED FOR US, ENABLING US TO GRAB HOLD OF HIS TRUTH AND CLING TO HIS WORD THAT SECURES US IN HIM, AS WE ARE LED UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF THE EASY YOKE OF HIS TORAH!

As we therefore consider the clear picture that these two words for ‘The Rock’ show us, we are able to recognise the True source of our strength and sustenance, as we look to our Rock, Refuge and Good Shepherd, our Master and Elohim, יהושע Messiah, who is our ROCK, יהוה  our Saviour!!!

His Work is perfect!

The Hebrew word used here for ‘work’ is פֹּעַל poal – Strong’s H6467 which means, doing, deed, work, activity, wages, what you have done, and comes from the primitive root פָּעַל paal – Strong’s H6466 which means, do, make, accomplish, perform.

Tehillah/Psalm 64:9 “And all men fear, and declare the work of Elohim. And they shall wisely consider what He has done.

Tehillah/Psalm 77:12 “And I shall meditate on all Your work, and talk of Your deeds.

 

The word used for ‘perfect’ is תָּמִים tamiym – Strong’s H8549, meaning ‘perfect, without blemish, complete, sound, and blameless, without defect’, and comes from the primitive root word תָּמַם tamam – Strong’s H8552 meaning, to be complete, to be finished, be at an end.

He is perfect and His work is perfect and He calls us to be ‘perfect’ in Him!

The Word calls for us to serve יהוה with a perfect heart!

But, you may ask, is it possible to serve יהוה with a perfect heart, are we not all sinners unable to be perfect?

Berěshith/Genesis 17:1And it came to be when Aḇram was ninety-nine years old, that יהוה appeared to Aḇram and said to him, “I am Ěl Shaddai – walk before Me and be perfect.

Mattithyahu/Matthew 5:48 “Therefore, be perfect, as your Father in the heavens is perfect.

Be perfect, often a hard expectation if understood in the wrong way, but what is it to be perfect or have a perfect heart?

Not a perfect heart’ often speaks of one who began well yet did not endure to the end – one who does not carry on to completion that which they are called to! It can be a ‘doing right, but…’ kind of scenario. There are to be no ‘buts’ in our committed life unto יהוה!

What does perfect mean? It can mean, flawless as in a flawless diamond, accurate, faithfully reproducing the original, pure complete, mature etc.

In the Hebrew there are two words for which we translate as perfect:

1 – שָׁלֵם shalĕmStrong’s H8003– which means pure, complete, safe, at peace, perfect, whole, finished, blameless, full. This is used in the Hebrew as an adjective, as in a perfect heart:

Melaḵim aleph/1Kings 8:61Let your heart therefore be perfect to יהוה our Elohim, to walk in His laws and guard His commands, as at this day.

2 - תָּמִים tamiym – Strong’s H8549 as described above – this is a verb that translates over 90 times as perfect, without blemish, complete or full:

Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 18:13Be perfect before יהוה your Elohim

Understanding these two Hebrew words used interchangeably throughout the Scriptures in referring to perfection in serving יהוה we can understand that the meaning is to be upright, totally obedient, to finish what was started and have a constant obedience. Having a perfect heart is having a responsive heart – one that answers quickly to יהוה’s call, His whisperings and His warnings.

In Hebrew the word heart is לֵבָב leḇaḇ – Strong’s H3824 and is not only seen as the seat of emotions, as we would understand it in our culture, but also as the seat of thoughts, whereas we see the brain as the seat of thoughts, the inner man, the mind the will and the heart. To the ancient Hebrew the heart was the mind including all thoughts and including emotions. In other words to love יהוה with all your heart is not simply speaking of an emotional love, but rather an exerted continual effort in keeping all of our emotions and thoughts working for and unto Him. Mattithyahu/Matthew 5:8 tells us that blessed are the pure in heart or those with a clean heart for they will see Elohim. Dawiḏ in Tehillim/Psalm 24 asks who can ascend the mountain of יהוה and stand in His set-apart place – those with innocent hands and a clean heart,

To be pure in heart means to be single minded in our devotion to יהוה and in our determination to love Him wholeheartedly.

So when we are told to be perfect (תָּמִים tamiym), we are told we are to be complete, and be mature in our thoughts and actions. We are to move on to maturity which comes through the perseverance of trials in order to be complete and not lack anything. It is those who are immature – those who stay on the milk of the Word, who cannot walk perfect before יהוה. Although many ought to be teachers by now, they have not moved on to maturity in the Word and stumble continually in the man-made traditions that have held people captive on milk. The church today is in large feeding people milk, and not even pure milk at that – but rather a ‘formula’ – which is man-made as opposed to the pure milk of a mother and never allows people to be weaned off from their constructed milk and think for themselves!

We know that Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah tells us in 17:9 that the heart is deceitful above all things – and perhaps that is why we can often so easily say everything is ok, when it is not! Yet Shemuʼĕl Aleph/1 Samuel 16:7 tells us that יהוה looks at the heart. So as יהוה looks at your heart – what does He see?

So how do we keep a perfect heart before יהוה?  It starts with being open before יהוה, allowing Him to deal with those imperfections that are in our heart:

Tehillah/Psalms 139: 23-24 “Search me, O Ěl, and know my heart; Try me, and know my thoughts; 24  and see if an idolatrous way is in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Dawiḏ was willing for יהוה  to search him and try his heart: a perfect heart is a searchable heart, which means we allow יהוה  to penetrate and examine deeply into our thoughts and emotions. The false teachings today tell you that as long as your heart doesn’t condemn you then you are ok and the Blood of יהושע has cleansed you, yet they fail to neglect what it says prior to this:

Yoḥanan Aleph/1 John 1:6-7If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and are not doing the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of יהושע Messiah His Son cleanses us from all sin.

His Blood cleanses us yes, but we are to be walking in the light as He is – we are to be walking in His instructions with a perfect heart inclining to walk in the perfect knowledge of His Loving Word!

All His ways are right-ruling:

The word used for ‘ways’ is דֶּרֶךְ dereḵ – Strong’s H1870 which means, way, road, distance, journey and is from the word דָּרַךְ daraḵ – Strong’s H1869  which means, to tread or march and so speaks of one’s walk, and every step that is taken, and we are to walk in Him who is THE WAY!!!!

The first time this word דֶּרֶךְ dereḵ  is used in in:

Berěshith/Genesis 3:24 “and He drove the man out. And He placed keruḇim at the east of the garden of Ěḏen, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.

Due to the sin of Aḏam and Ḥawwah, they were driven out of the garden of Ěḏen, and driven from the presence of יהוה, with no access to the way to the tree of life! Before they were driven out Elohim made for them coats of skin, and in this we are able to see the powerful shadow picture of the protection and covering we have in יהושע Messiah, the Passover Lamb that was slain for us, in order that we can once again be brought near to the presence of Elohim and have access to the tree of life and have the full assurance of an everlasting life with our Master who shall come and receive us to Himself!

In the ancient pictographic symbols of this word, we are given a greater insight in understanding how יהושע Messiah is THE WAY! This word - דֶּרֶךְ dereḵ - in the ancient script looks like this:

Daletדֶּ

The ancient script has this letter as dalet and is pictured as a ‘tent door’. It can also have the meaning of a back and forth movement as one goes back and forth through a tent door and so speaks of an access point. It can also carry the meaning of ‘dangle’ or hanging as the tent door would hang from the roof pole of the tent. It speaks a great deal in terms of understanding the door of the tent of appointment as the only means of access.

 

Resh - רֶ

The ancient script has this letter as resh and is pictured as ‘the head of a man’ and has the meaning of the head of a man as well as chief, top, begging or first. Top as in the top or head of a body and chief an is head of a tribe or people as well as the one who rules the people.

 

Kaph - כֶּ:

The ancient form of this letter is pictured as kaph - which is ‘an open palm of a hand’. The meaning behind this letter is ‘to bend and curve’ from the shape of a palm as well as ‘to tame or subdue’ as one has been bent to another’s will (under their hand), as an open hand symbolises submission. This also can picture for us a palm or palm branch from the curved palm shape. This also pictures for us that which has been openly revealed – by the ‘open hand’, or the revelation of the hand that has worked a function!

As we consider these three pictures in making up the Hebrew word דֶּרֶךְ dereḵ, in reference to this meaning THE WAY, we can clearly see how it is יהושע Messiah who is THE WAY. As we come to the DOOR of the Tent of APPOINTMENT we are able to come and submit under the hand of our Master and Chief, who gives us access into His presence.

Yoḥanan/John 10:19 “I am the door. Whoever enters through Me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and shall go out and find pasture.

 

Right-Rulings - מִּשְׁפָּטִים mishpatim plural of H4941 מִּשְׁפָּטִ mishpat which means right-ruling or judgement and are the ‘legal procedures’ or firm rulings that are non-negotiable. It is through these mishpatim that community is to be ruled and how any issues that may arise would be dealt with in a prescribed way that is just and fair. These are what we could call the ‘social laws’ that clearly teach us how to get on with each other and how we are to behave and how we are to live according to how we have been created to be in יהושע.

Tehillah/Psalm 89:14 “Righteousness and right-ruling are the foundation of Your throne; kindness and truth go before Your face.

Tehillah/Psalm 97:2 “Clouds and darkness all around Him, righteousness and right-ruling are the foundation of His throne.

The walk of Messiah is right-ruling and we are told in:

Yoḥanan Aleph/1 John 2:6 “The one who says he stays in Him ought himself also to walk, even as He walked.

He came to show us how we can faithfully walk in his ways – according to His right-ruling; and anyone who claims that the Torah has been done away with, can in no way ‘be perfect’ or walk in Him as we ought to!!!

Elohim of truth and without unrighteousness!

The Hebrew word translated as ‘truth’ is אֱמוּנָה emunah – Strong’s H530 which means, firmness, steadfastness, faithfulness, stability, trust, truthful, and comes from the primitive root אָמַן aman – Strong’s H539 which means, to confirm, support, believe, trustworthy. We serve a faithful and trustworthy Elohim – and in Him we find true stability, as we stand upon the Rock of Truth! In Him there is no ‘unrighteousness’, which is the word עָוֶל avel – Strong’s H5766 which means, injustice, unrighteousness, wrong, iniquity

When looking at אֱמוּנָה emunah – Strong’s H530 in the ancient pictographic script we are able to learn the clear characteristic of trustworthiness, as it looks like this:

Aleph - אֱ:

The ancient script has this letter as aleph and is pictured as the head of an ox, and represents ‘strength’, meaning ‘muscle’ as the ox is the strongest of the livestock animals. This also carries the meaning of ‘yoke’, as an ox is placed in a yoke in order to plough or pull a heavy load in the right direction. This can also picture for us the ‘red heifer’ sacrifice that יהושע Messiah fulfilled!

 

Mem – מֶ

The ancient script has this letter as mem and is pictured as ‘water’, and also carries the meaning of ‘chaos’ (from the storms of the sea) and can also picture that which is mighty or massive as well as the unknown. We are also able to understand this letter as representing the nations, for the nations are often likened to the seas in Scripture. This also carries for us the picture of washing, as we understand the function of water being that which cleanses us and sustains us, showing us how we are washed and sustained by the Living Waters of the Word!

Waw/Vav – וּ:

The ancient script has this letter pictured as  waw, which is a ‘peg or tent peg’, which was used for securing or tying the tent or other items. The possibility of it having a Y-shape is to show that it prevents the rope from slipping off. The root meaning of this letter is ‘to add, secure or hook’.

Nun – נָ:

The ancient pictographic script has this letter pictured as nun, which pictures asprouting seedand gives the idea of continuation or an offspring or an heir, speaking of that which sprouts forth to be the heir of the promise of continuation, and represents one’s life expectancy.

Hey – ה:

The ancient script has this letter pictured as hey, which is a ‘man standing with his arms raised out’. The meaning of the letter is ‘behold, look, breath, sigh and reveal or revelation’ from the idea of revealing a great sight by pointing it out. It also carries for us the meaning of surrender as we lift up our hands and submit to יהוה as we lift our hands in praise, declaring His authority under which we humbly submit!

In the understanding of this word אֱמוּנָה emunah – Strong’s H530 representing for us ‘trustworthiness’, we can clearly see from these pictures the following:

THE COMPLETE AND SURE STRENGTH OF OUR MASTER WHO WASHES US AND SECURES FOR US THE PROMISE OF EVERLASTING LIFE, AS WE SUBMIT TO HIM AND PRAISE HIM WITH OUR ALL.

Our ability and strength to remain trustworthy servants, comes as we allow The Word of our Master to wash us and secure us in Him, as we walk in total submission to Him, with hands lifted high in continual praise of our Master and Elohim.

In understanding the construct of this song, where we have been clearly presented with the two permanent witnesses; we are now clearly presented with the first party of the Covenant – An Elohim who is a faithful, trustworthy, steadfast Rock, who is our Great and Mighty King!

Righteous and straight is He!

The word translated as ‘righteous’ is the Hebrew word צַדִּיק tsaddiq – Strong’s H6662 which means, just, righteous, blameless, lawful and comes from the primitive root צָדֵק tsaḏeq – Strong’s H6663 which means, to be just or righteous, justified, properly restored. The Hebrew word for ‘straight’ here is יָשָׁר yashar - Strong’s H3477, and means, right, straight, upright and righteous.

So what we have now before us is the clear presentation of this song of witness declaring its steadfast witnesses as well as presenting the first party to the Covenant – a righteous and straight Elohim in whom there is no crookedness – and in Him we are expected to respond likewise; yet as we see in this song that was to be remembered for all generations; the second party – that is the House of Yisra’ĕl did not walk upright and straight!

We are told in Scripture that Noaḥ was a righteous man, perfect in his generations and that Noaḥ walked with Elohim.

And the way for us to walk in righteousness before Elohim is stated very clearly and plainly in:

Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 6:25And it is righteousness for us when we guard to do all this command before יהוה our Elohim, as He has commanded us.

The Book of Yasher commonly known to us as ‘Jasher’ means the book of the ‘upright/straight’ or the Book of the ‘Righteous’.

We, as children of Elohim are called to walk upright and straight, called to walk and do what is ‘right’ in the eyes of יהוה – called to do what is ‘yashar’ – called to walk in righteousness and that is to walk in His Torah!

Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 12:28Guard, and obey all these words which I command you, that it might be well with you and your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the eyes of יהוה your Elohim.

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 14:12 & 16:25There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death

Proverbs tells us that there is a way that seems ‘yashar/ right’ to man – but that only leads to death – too many want to follow their own way of what they determine as living right according to their own man-made standards yet will sadly only find that any other way other than that of the Torah of Elohim simply leads to destruction! Broad is the way that leads to destruction and many walk thereon – there are many ways of man – yet narrow is the path to life and few find it – that path is ‘in’ Messiah as we walk according to His instructions – The Torah which is life!

Tehillah/Psalm 7:10 “My shield is upon Elohim, who saves the upright in heart.

 

The root of ‘yashar’ can be employed in at least 3 ways:

A – Literally – As it means to go straight or direct in the way. The root meaning of Torah comes from the Hebrew word ‘Horah’ which means ‘to direct’ or ‘to teach’ and is derived from the stem word ‘yara’ which means ‘to shoot’ or ‘to throw’.

In other words it means that you aim or point in the right direction and you move in that direction. So to walk upright or straight is to walk in the direction you have set your eyes upon and as those who ‘stay in’ Him we fix our eyes on יהושע Messiah and constantly walk straight! The more intensive form of ‘yashar’ means to ‘make’ a straight way and that is to make a direct and level way that is free from obstacles as they would do in the days past when they would prepare the way to receive a royal visitor – making a level path for them to travel upon. In other words the intensive form of doing what is right in His eyes carriers with it great action and dedicated commitment in all we do:

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 3:6Know Him in all your ways, and He makes all your paths straight.

When we acknowledge Him in all our ways – guess what – He makes our paths straight that we can walk in the Torah of Freedom! But we have a part to play – our faith walk cannot be without works!

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 40:3 “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of יהוה; make straight in the desert a highway for our Elohim.

In the Wilderness’ – as we know Bemiḏbar means ‘in the Wilderness’ and it literally means for us, ‘the place of words or speaking’. In other words the Wilderness in a time for us to listen and hear His voice – hear His instructions – Hear – guard and do! Hoshěa/Hosea 2:14 tells us that He is alluring her (His Bride) into the Wilderness and shall speak to her heart – a place of listening! It is through the Wilderness journey, on our way to the Promise from exile, where He instructs us that we are able to make level paths and be a prepared Bride for His return!

Make straight – make yashar’ in the desert a highway for our Elohim! We are to be making a straight way – literally getting our lives into living upright in His eyes for our King is coming – will He find faith – faith that is active and alive and upright?

B – EthicallyUprightness speaks ethically of the manner of life as a characteristic quality of the blameless and discerning follower of יהזשע:

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 11:5The righteousness of the perfect makes his way straight, But by his own wrongness the wrong one falls.

Tehillah/Psalm 119:128 “Therefore all Your orders I count as right; I have hated every false way.

One who walks in righteousness makes his way straight and in doing so all the commands or orders we count as right – as ‘yashar’ – and in the process we hate every false way! You see until you have repented of all falsehood and false ways of worship you cannot walk fully straight as you will always find yourself ‘hanging on’ to something of the past falsehood – let go – repent and walk upright!

C – As an idiomatic expression with eyes – that is we see the word ‘right’ or ‘yashar’ being used as an expression with ‘eyes’ as in to be right in the eyes of a person simply means to have approval of the person by keeping their instructions! To do what is right – ‘ha yashar’ in the eyes of יהוה is linked with obedience to His commands and Covenant:

Shemoth/Exodus 15:26 “And He said, “If you diligently obey the voice of יהוה your Elohim and do what is right in His eyes, and shall listen to His commands and shall guard all His laws, I shall bring on you none of the diseases I brought on the Mitsrites, for I am יהוה who heals you.

Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 13:18when you obey the voice of יהוה your Elohim, to guard all His commands which I command you today, to do what is right in the eyes of יהוה your Elohim.

 Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 6:17-18Diligently guard the commands of יהוה your Elohim, and His witnesses, and His laws which He has commanded you. 18 And you shall do what is right and good in the eyes of יהוה, that it might be well with you, and you shall go in and possess the good land of which יהוה swore to your fathers

What we can clearly see here is that to do what is right in His eyes – that is the eyes of  יהוה is simply to do His commands and guard to keep them diligently!  To not do so is to not walk right and therefore only walk by what is right in one’s own eyes only to find that the path of self is destructive unto death!

A life of faith begins with obedience!

Now let us take a look at the statements being made ‘prophetically’ by this song that Mosheh relayed to the children of Yisra’ĕl.

Verse 5

A twisted and crooked generation has corrupted itself!

A very harsh statement first up – yet very accurate in its clear wording!

The Hebrew word translated as ‘twisted’ is עִקֵּשׁ iqqesh – Strong’s H6141 which means, twisted, perverted, crooked, and so we see this clear statement being made to a people who twist the straight Word of יהוה, and we are told in:

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 8:8All the words of my mouth are in righteousness, none of them twisted or crooked

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 19:1Better is the poor walking in his integrity than one of perverse lips, who is a fool.

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 11:20The perverse of heart are an abomination to יהוה, but the perfect in the Way are His delight.

The Hebrew word translated as ‘crooked’ is פְּתַלְתֹּל pethaltol – Strong’s H6618 and means, tortuous, crooked and is only used here in this verse, and comes from to the root verb פָּתַל pathal – Strong’s H6617 which means, to twist, cunning, to show yourself astute, and it is also used in:

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 8:8 All the words of my mouth are in righteousness, none of them twisted or crooked

Shemuʼěl Bět/2 Samuel 22:27 With the clean You show Yourself clean, and with the crooked You show Yourself twisted.

So this ‘twisted and crooked’ generation had ‘corrupted’ itself; and the Hebrew root word for ‘corrupted’ is שָׁחַת shaḥath – Strong’s H7843 meaning, destroy, ruin, spoil, pervert, corrupt.

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 1:4 “Alas, sinning nation, a people loaded with crookedness, a seed of evil-doers, sons acting corruptly! They have forsaken יהוה, they have provoked the Set-apart One of Yisra’ĕl, they went backward.

Sin, which is lawlessness, brings decay and ruin and in the process it perverts the Truth and corrupts the purity of a clear standard of righteousness that is called for. By the time of Messiah, the Pharisees and Sadducees had corrupted the word so much, that He also referred to them as a crooked and wicked generation.

Mattithyahu/Matthew 16:4 “A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Yonah.” And He left them and went away.

When the Word is corrupted by sin and lawlessness and man then attempts to change the laws through the institution of man-made dogmas and traditions, the focus of the lawless becomes attracted to signs and wonders, while they quickly neglect the purity and simplicity of the Truth that they are to walk in by faith; and in the process we find how man-made religious institutions try to ‘sell’ their portrayal of the Truth by the seeming attraction of signs and wonders.

Messiah told this corrupt lot that the only sign that they (the wicked and adulterous) would receive from the Father, would be the sign of the prophet Yonah – 3 days and 3 nights!!!

There are so many twisted and crooked ‘road shows’  of orchestrated signs and wonders that attract the masses into a frenzy of false belief systems that have simply corrupted the Truth of the Word of Elohim and in the process they cannot even see the one sign that is given to a wicked and corrupt generation! Think about the church at large for a moment – they proclaim miracles and healing and preach a prosperity message that extends a false hope to a desperate people, yet they neglect to even see the truth of the sig of Yonah – 3 days and 3 nights – as they follow pagan rooted fertility worship rites in the celebration of Easter/Ishtar that claims a salvation message by an assumed saviour who died on a ‘Friday’ afternoon and rose on a ‘sun-day’ day – neglecting to see the obvious fact that it is impossible to get 3 days and 3 nights between a Friday and a Sunday!!!

What we find as a very sobering warning and wakeup call in this song is the result of this corruption and twisting of the Truth – and that is, as it tells us in this verse 5, that the twisted and crooked, who corrupt themselves with traditions and man-made lies, are NOT His children!!! The crooked and perverse are illegitimate children; and those who cast the Covenant behind them in declaring that the Torah is no longer of any use or is invalid, יהוה warns in:

Tehillah/Psalm 50:16-17 “But to the wrong Elohim said, “What right have you to recite My laws, or take My covenant in your mouth, 17 “While you hated instruction and cast My Words behind you?

So many today who refuse to walk ‘in’ the Torah want to ‘claim’ a right to all the promises of the Covenants of Promise and twist and pervert the Truth as a means to justify their lawlessness; and those who do not hear the call to repentance, will sadly receive a very sobering and terrifying truth that they are not His children, even though they claim to call upon Him and claim to have done so much for Him, while they have simply neglected to obey His commands and walk in the Torah of Truth!

Luqas/Luke 13:25-28 “When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ‘Master, Master, open for us,’ and He shall answer and say to you, ‘I do not know you, where you are from,’ 26 then you shall begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ 27 “But He shall say, ‘I say to you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of unrighteousness.’ 28 “There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Aḇraham and Yitsḥaq  and Ya’aqoḇ and all the prophets in the reign of Elohim, and yourselves thrown outside.

Those who refuse to be disciplined by the Truth of the Father are not true sons:

Iḇ’rim/Hebrews 12:8But if you are without discipline, of which all have become sharers, then you are illegitimate and not sons.

Verse 6

The appeal is clear – and that is a call to recognise the foolishness of sin/lawlessness and recognise the inherited lies of traditions of man that corrupt the truth!

Do you do this to יהוה? What most people do not realise today is that while they so zealously follow after man-made dogmas and traditions that tickle the ears with an assumed righteousness, they are in fact walking contrary to the Word and they do so without shame, thinking that they are right!!! As a result of corruption, most fail to recognise who it is that created them and established them - because if they did, they would do what the Creator says!

A foolish and unwise people neglect the name of the Creator and neglect to walk in wisdom through the guarding of His commands!

Tehillah/Psalm 74:18 “Remember this: the enemy has reproached יהוה, and a foolish people has despised Your Name.

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 4:22 “For My people are foolish, they have not known Me. They are stupid children, and they have no understanding. They are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 5:21-23 “Hear this now, O foolish people without heart, who have eyes and see not, and who have ears and hear not: 22 ‘Do you not fear Me?’ declares יהוה. ‘Do you not tremble at My presence, who have placed the sand as the boundary of the sea, by an everlasting law, and it does not pass over it? Though its waves toss to and fro, they are not able; though they roar, they do not pass over it. 23 ‘But this people has a backsliding and rebellious heart, they have turned aside and gone away.

 

Sha’ul had much to say to a people who had fallen for the religious dogmas of the hand written laws of man due to peer pressure of man; and in the process had departed from walking in pure and total obedience to the Torah of Elohim:

Galatiyim/Galatians 3:1-3 “O senseless Galatians! Who has put you under a spell, not to obey the truth – before whose eyes יהושע Messiah was clearly portrayed among you as impaled? 2 This only I wish to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of Torah, or by the hearing of belief? 3 Are you so senseless? Having begun in the Spirit, do you now end in the flesh?

יהוה is our Maker, and we must bow down and submit to Him and obey His Word which does not pass away!

Tehillah/Psalm 95:6 “Come, let us bow down and bend low, let us kneel before יהוה our Maker.

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 44:2 “Thus said יהוה who made you and formed you from the womb, who helps you, ‘Do not fear, O Ya’aqoḇ My servant, and Yeshurun, whom I have chosen.

 

Verse 7

Remember the days of old!

The word used here for ‘remember’ is זָכַר zaar – Strong’s H2142 which means ‘to remember, or be mindful, or bring to remembrance’; The true givers of thanks will be mindful and remember the Covenant and walk in the Torah of יהוה, as we remember His wonders which He has done. A word derived from this for ‘remembrance’ is זִכָּרוֹןzikkaron’- Strong’s H2146 meaning ‘memorial, commemoration or remembrance’; and as we know we are commanded to have a remembrance on Yom Teruah – a remembrance of the Trumpet blast or shout!

We are to remember His wondrous works, His miracles and His right-rulings! The word used for ‘miracles’ means ‘signs, wonders’ and these we do remember – how He delivered Yisra’ĕl from Mitsrayim through great signs and wonders and His marvellous deliverance that He has brought! We can remember His signs and wonders and do not need to look to the ‘signs and wonders’ that many wicked and adulterous seek today!

When we remember His works, we are greatly encouraged to the sure promise of His return and therefore do not need other signs and wonders to determine our faith – yet as we go out, giving thanks and proclaiming His Name, יהושע Messiah tells us in:

Marqos/Mark 16:17-18 “And these signs shall accompany the ones who believe: In My Name they shall cast out demons, they shall speak with renewed tongues, 18 they shall take up snakes, and if they drink any deadly drink it shall by no means hurt them, they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall get well.

 

The word used for ‘old’ in ‘days of old’ is עוֹלָם olam – Strong’s H5796 which means, long duration, antiquity, ancient times, ages, eternal, everlasting, forevermore and this word is also used in:

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 6:16 “Thus said יהוה, “Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and find rest for yourselves. But they said, ‘We do not walk in it.’

Dawiḏ says in;

Tehillah/Psalm 119:52 “I remembered Your right-rulings of old, O יהוה, and I comfort myself.

The Word of יהוה is an everlasting Word that is from old, yet is not ‘old’ but firmly established forever and in the song of Dawiḏ we see the call given to lift up heads and gates in:

Tehillah/Psalm 24:7 “Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And let the Sovereign of esteem come in.

We know that יהושע is the Door and the commands of יהוה were to be put on the ‘door posts’; and so by this call for the everlasting doors to be lifted up so that the Sovereign of esteem can come in, is a call to walk in and submit to the clear Torah of Elohim, as we the Bride make ourselves ready for our King’s return, that He may find a faithful Bride who adheres to His everlasting Word from of old!

Today many are realising the inherited lies of the fathers that have been handed down for centuries, and are asking for the truth from of old and seeking to know and walk in the everlasting Word that does not change!

We are to ‘remember’ the days of ‘old’ and ‘consider’ the years of many generations – this will help us make a very sober decision to walk in the Truth as we consider the mistakes of the past generations, as well as the many who lived by faith and walked in the Truth amidst a wicked and crooked generation!

The Hebrew word used for ‘consider’ is בִּין bin – Strong’s H995 meaning, to discern, act wisely, consider carefully, understand, perceive. This word is used in:

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 28:5Evil men do not understand right-ruling, but those who seek יהוה understand all.

As well as in:

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 6:9 “And He said, “Go, and you shall say to this people, ‘Hearing, you hear, but do not understand; and seeing, you see, but do not know.’

 

We see this word being used also in:

Tehillah/Psalm 119:34 “Make me understand, that I might observe Your Torah, and guard it with all my heart.

Tehillah/Psalm 119:104 “From Your orders I get understanding; therefore I have hated every false way.

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 2:4-5 “If you seek her as silver, and search for her as hidden treasures, 5 then you would understand the fear of יהוה, and find the knowledge of Elohim.

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 9:10The fear of יהוה is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Set-apart One is understanding.

So what we can see here in this call to ‘consider’ is the clear call for us to ‘understand’ the Word of יהוה, as we diligently seek to hear, guard and do His commands; and what we also recognise clearly from a Hebraic perspective is that ‘understanding’ comes in the ‘doing’ and as we ‘consider/understand’ the generations gone by, we are able to learn from the effects of obedience and disobedience and the contrasting consequences thereof, teaching us to have open ears and eyes, that we might walk fully in the Truth with joy and gladness of heart!

Verse 8-14

This song for Yisra’ĕl continues in making it clear what יהוה has done; and how He separated the sons of Aḏam, where we see how 70 nations came forth from the 3 sons of Noaḥ, which can be seen in Berěshith/Genesis 10. יהוה set boundaries for the peoples according the number of the children of Yisra’ĕl:

Bemiḏbar/Number 26:53The land is to be divided to these as an inheritance, according to the number of names.

Yehoshua/Joshua 11:23 “Thus Yehoshua took the entire land, according to all that יהוה had said to Mosheh. And Yehoshua gave it as an inheritance to Yisra’ĕl according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from fighting.

From these two verses we see a very powerful truth of How יהוה has allotted us our inheritance, as clearly spoken through Mosheh (His Torah); and that it is His Torah that is our trainer unto Messiah who, as pictured through the life of Yehoshua, will lead us into our inheritance and give us according to our inheritance and bring complete rest!

Bemiḏbar/Numbers 24 deals with the boundaries commanded by Mosheh that were to be given to the children of Yisra’ĕl when they entered the Promised Land.

The word used for ‘boundaries’ here in verse 8 is  גְּבוּלָה geḇulah – Strong’s H1367 meaning, border, boundary, territory, landmark and is the feminine of גְּבוּל geḇul – Strong’s H1366. Before we go into the Land, יהוה defines our boundaries! We all need ‘boundaries’ and it is a fact that children who have no boundaries are more likely to end up breaking the law and possibly be imprisoned, as a result of their parents not putting boundaries down when they were growing up! Boundaries are good for us and keep us safe! In actual fact ‘boundaries’ that are set by יהוה show us that He loves us.

The word used for ‘set’ is נָצַב natsaḇ – Strong’s H5324 meaning, to take one’s stand, be upright, established, standing and it is written in the ‘hiphil active’ tense which represents the ‘causative tense’ can render the meaning, to set up, erect, station, cause to stand, fix, establish.

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 31:21 “Set up signposts, make landmarks; set your heart toward the highway, the way in which you went. Turn back, O maiden of Yisra’ĕl, turn back to these cities of yours!

The word of Elohim is ‘set and established’ and it is His word that causes us to ‘stand’ secure in our position ion Messiah!

 

The portion of יהוה is His people, Ya’aqoḇ is His allotted inheritance. Now we know that the earth and all that is in it belongs to יהוה – therefore we clearly understand how the ‘meek’ shall inherit the earth – that is those who are ‘overcomers’.

Tehillah/Psalm 135:4 “For Yah has chosen Ya’aqoḇ for Himself, Yisra’ĕl for His treasured possession.

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 51:19 “The Portion of Ya’aqoḇ is not like them, for He is the Maker of all, and Yisra’ĕl is the tribe of His inheritance. יהוה of hosts is His Name.

 

Sha’ul in his letter to the assembly in Ephesos writes that he prays for them to see and understand what our inheritance is:

Eph’siyim/Ephesians 1:17-18 “that the Elohim of our Master יהושע Messiah, the Father of esteem, would give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened, so that you know what is the expectation of His calling, and what are the riches of the esteem of His inheritance in the set-apart ones.

 

Kěpha makes it clear to us in:

Kěpha Aleph/1 Peter 2:9-10But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a set-apart nation, a people for a possession, that you should proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light, 10 who once were not a people, but now the people of Elohim; who had not obtained compassion, but now obtained compassion.

As we understand our inheritance, we ought to take careful heed how we live here and now as sojourners; diligently guarding to walk in and obey the clear Torah of our Master and Maker, who has called us unto Himself in Messiah!

 

In verse 10 we see how יהוה watched over Ya’aqoḇ as the apple of His eye! This is a Hebraic expression which portrays the intensity of one’s focus on one’s beloved! The word translated as ‘apple’ is אִישׁוֹן ishon – Strong’s H380 which means, the pupil of the eye, middle and comes from the root word used for ‘man’ which is אִישׁ ish – Strong’s H376. This is a very powerful statement that shows us how focused יהוה is on His called out, chosen ones. This could also be rendered as the ‘little man of the eye’, whereby we are able to, by the intensity of His focus upon us, see our reflection in the pupil of His eye – as an expression of ability to look intently into the mirror of His Word and not forget how we look and how we ought to look, as we become doers of the Word and not just hearers only!

His Torah we are to guard as the apple of our eye:

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 7:2Guard my commands and live, and my Torah as the apple of your eye.

This instruction is clear – we are to be so intently focused on His Torah, and guard His commands that we may live, and we do this by ‘fixing our eyes’ on Messiah, our Princely Leader and Perfecter of our belief:

Iḇ’rim/Hebrews 12:2looking to the Princely Leader and Perfecter of our belief, יהושע, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the stake, having despised the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of Elohim.

We are told to be ‘looking’ to Messiah – and as we can see from the verse before this one, is that in order to be able to properly ‘look’ at Messiah, we need to throw off and lay aside every weight and sin that easily entangles us and run with endurance - looking intently at our King as we run faithfully as servants of the Most High Elohim!

Many are trying to run, yet find themselves getting tired and unable to endure the hardships and persecutions that comes as a result of set-apart living amidst a crooked generation! The question that you need to ask yourself as you take an eye test so to speak is, “What are you looking at?” Are you looking at Messiah?

The two words used here for our Messiah are:

Prince’ - ἀρχηγός  - archēgos - Strong’s G747 – translates as ‘prince, captain, chief leader and author’ and describes ‘one that takes the lead in anything and thus affords an example, a predecessor in a matter, pioneer’.

Perfecter’ - τελειωτής  - teleiōtēs - Strong’s G5051 – this is the only place this Greek word and denotes a ‘finisher, completer, perfecter’ and describes ‘one who has in his own person raised faith to its perfection and so set before us the highest example of faith. This is a description given only to יהושע Messiah who has become the supreme model for us to follow.

The Greek word for ‘looking’ is ἀφοράω aphorao - Strong’s G872 and means ‘to look/ to turn eyes away from all other things and fix them on something’, metaphorically speaking it means ‘to fix the mind upon/ give full attention/ looking intently upon/ to take heed’, and it also means, to consider carefully, attentively look at and comes from the two Greek words: ἀπό  apo – Strong’s G575 which is a preposition and participle that means, from, away from, at, in, to and the word ὁράω  horaō – Strong’s G3708 which means, to see, perceive, attend to, take heed, see with the mind, beware, to see as in becoming acquainted with by experience.

We are to look to Messiah and careful consider our ways, and we are at the same time to ensure that are eyes are not looking elsewhere as we ‘take heed’ of the corrupt teachings of man-made dogmas and traditions that lead people astray. We are to also take heed not to get consumed by materialism, and Messiah warns us against these in:

Mattithyahu/Matthew 16:6 “And יהושע said to them, “Mind! And beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

Luqas/Luke 12:15 “And He said to them, “Mind, and beware of greed, because one’s life does not consist in the excess of his possessions.

The word ‘mind’ in both these warnings given is the word ὁράω horaō – take heed, be watchful that you do not fall prey to the corruption of man’s rules and regulations regarding a form of worship that runs contrary to the Truth and watch out that you don’t get sucked into the need to gain possessions – because your life does not consist in the excess of possessions!

יהושע came to bring us a recovery of sight – by manifesting the very Truth in the Flesh, separating the light from the dark:

Luqas/Luke 4:18-19 “The Spirit of יהוה is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to bring the Good News to the poor. He has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send away crushed ones with a release, 19 to proclaim the acceptable year of יהוה.

The Greek word for ‘the blind’ is τυφλός  tuphlos – Strong’s G5185 which can mean physically or mentally blind and comes from the word τυφόω  tuphoō – Strong’s G5187 which means, to be conceited, foolish, arrogance, vanity, to be lifted up with pride, high-minded. It can also render the understanding of being enveloped with smoke and blinded so as not to see. The word for ‘recovery of sight’ is ἀνάβλεψις  anablepsis – Strong’s G309 and comes from the word ἀναβλέπω  anablepō – Strong’s G308 which means, to look up, recover sight, and comes from the word βλέπω  blepō – Strong’s G991 which means, to see, to look at, beware, take heed, perceive.

When we understand these words in their original meanings it further helps us understand that Messiah came to take away the smokescreen of tradition and man-made dogmas, and then we clearly understand the words of Sha’ul in:

Qorintiyim Bět/2 Corinthians 3:16And when one turns to the Master, the veil is taken away.”

When one turns and looks intently into the Light all darkness is taken away! He came to recover our sight and cause us to take heed and see His Good News and be able to see with טוֹב to - that is – good and functional - eyes!

Knowing that the days are dark and evil we are to look intently to the Light and allow the Light (Torah) to light our way, so  that we can confidently take each step of faith with boldness and assurance of the hope we have in our Creator and Saviour - יהושע Messiah – The Light of the world!

Seeing and watching is what we are to be doing and guard ourselves and take heed not to fall asleep; and in light of what we are discussing here let us look further at some very critical words of warning that are to take heed of from our Master in:

Marqos/Mark 13:33-37 “Take heed, watch and pray, for you do not know when the time is – 34 as a man going abroad, having left his house and given authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch. 35 “Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming – in the evening or at midnight, or at the crowing of the cock, or in the morning, 36 lest, coming suddenly, he should find you sleeping. 37 “And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!

Take heed’ is the word we discussed already - βλέπω  blepō  - a root of the word used in ‘recovery of sight’, and the word for ‘watch’ in the above verses 34,35 & 37 is γρηγορέω  grēgoreō – Strong’s G1127 which means, keep awake, be vigilant, and is formed from the word ἐγείρω  egeirō – Strong’s G1453 which means, to waken, raise up, arise.

The word translated as ‘watch’ in verse 33 is the Greek word ἀγρυπνέω agrupneō – Strong’s G69 and means, to be sleepless, wakeful, alert, keep watch as it comes from the two Greek words: ‘a’ – as a negative participle and ὕπνος hupnos – Strong’s G5258 which is the Greek word used for ‘sleep’, and while meaning sleep it also carries the understanding of ‘being under, put under’.  In fact we get our English word ‘hypnosis’ from this word. Hypnosis is a trance-like state that resembles sleep but is induced by a person whose suggestions are readily accepted by the subject!

In Greek mythology ‘Hypnos’ was the personification of sleep and was the Greek mighty one of sleep whose palace was in a dark cave there the sun never shines and at the entrance there were poppies and other hypnotic plants. The Roman equivalent to this pagan mighty one was ‘Somnus’ from which the English word ‘insomnia’ is derived – ‘in..’ meaning ‘no or to not’ and ‘somnus’ meaning sleep!

So what we clearly understand in the command to ‘watch’ is that we are to ‘keep awake, be vigilant’ and DO NOT SLEEP or get hypnotised under the spell of the false doctrines of man!

In the illustration that יהושע gives here, we can also learn from the command given to the ‘doorkeeper’ to watch, that this is exactly what is required of a faithful servant – to be awake, watchful and guarding the door!

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 20:12-13The hearing ear and the seeing eye, יהוה has made both of them. 13 Do not love sleep, lest you become poor; open your eyes, be satisfied with bread.

 

If we are not ‘awake’ to His Truth and are not making the Torah the apple of our eye, we may find ourselves under the hypnotic spell of lies and man-made traditions that brings a famine for the Word!

Hearing ear and seeing eye that the Master has made, must be fully functional in fixing our eyes on His Truth, hearing his Word and walking in it!

We can never keep the Torah as the apple of our eye, if our eyes are not open to His Word! He is fixed upon us and so too must we be upon Him, for in doing so there is a great promise of protection and a sure inheritance!

Zeḵaryah/Zechariah 2:8For thus said יהוה of hosts (for the sake of esteem He sent me to the gentiles which plunder you): “For he who touches you touches the apple of My eye.

In Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 32:13 we are told how יהוה made Ya’aqoḇ ride on the heights of the earth! This wording can point us to the clear promise in Yeshayahu, which should be clear enough evidence for us of how Ya’aqoḇ, at one point, guarded the commands of Elohim and did not neglect to keep the Sabbath, for it tells us clearly in:

 

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 58:13:14 “If you do turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on My set-apart day, and shall call the Sabbath ‘a delight,’ the set-apart day of יהוה ‘esteemed,’ and shall esteem it, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words, 14 then you shall delight yourself in יהוה. And I shall cause you to ride on the heights of the earth, and feed you with the inheritance of Ya’aqoḇ your father. For the mouth of יהוה has spoken!

 

He took us (Yisra’ĕl) form the worst conditions (slavery) and put us in the best (Promised Land), and gave us the best of the best from the milk and meat of the animals; as well as the best of the land.

 

Verse 15-18

With everything going well for Yisra’ĕl, you would think that continued obedience would have been the natural response of a thankful and appreciative people who had been delivered from bondage; yet what we see here is how Yeshurun grew fat! Yeshurun’ – which means ‘upright one’, is used as a symbolic term of all 12 Tribes of Yisra’ĕl serving together in unity!

יְשֻׁרוּן Yeshurun – Strong’s H3484 comes from the word יָשַׁר yashar – Strong’s H3474 which means, straight, right, pleasing, be level, upright, just and lawful.

This is what יהוה has chosen Yisra’ĕl for - to be straight and upright and walk in His Torah, shining the Light of His Besorah (Good News) amidst a crooked world.  His promises are sure and secure for His called upright ones.

Sadly what we see here is that, despite being given everything, a called for ‘upright’ Yisra’ĕl, squandered their inheritance by taking advantage of a good thing! They grew fat in the comfort and as a result lacked the stamina and fitness of being able to continue in steadfast obedience, as they fell prey to the mixing of worship in order to suit their fleshly desires!

Yisra’ĕl was healthy and well-provided for, yet they very quickly became spoiled, and in the process began to think that they deserved the blessings of יהוה, which resulted in Yisra’ĕl’s ability to be thankful to cease; and instead of giving thanks to יהוה in all things, they rebelled and forsook the Rock who made them!

The word used here for ‘forsook’ is נָטַשׁ natash – Strong’s H5203 which means, to leave, forsake, fall, abandon, cast away, and we are told in:

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 1:8My son, heed the discipline of your father, and do not forsake the Torah of your mother.

This word is used twice in:

Tehillah/Psalm 94:14 “For יהוה does not leave His people, nor does He forsake His inheritance.

A wicked and rebellious people forsake The Truth and follow after other false mighty ones, provoking יהוה to jealousy with foreign matters!

Yisra’ĕlscoffed’ at the Rock of deliverance and the Hebrew word for ‘scoffed’ is נָבַל naḇal – Strong’s H5034 meaning, to be senseless or foolish, treat contemptuously, dishonour, come to nought, fall off’.  In Shemuʼĕl Aleph/1 Samuel 25 we are introduced to a stubborn and foolish man who refused to help Dawiḏ  and his men; and his name was Naḇal -נָבָל Strong’s H5037 which means … ‘FOOL’… yes … ‘fool, senseless, foolish’!!! This man was a FOOL!

A derivative of the verb נָבַל naḇal – Strong’s H5034 is the noun - נָבָל naḇal – Strong’s H5036 which means, foolish or senseless’, and is found in:

Tehillah/Psalm 53:1 “The fool has said in his heart, “There is no Elohim.” They have done corruptly, and they have done abominable unrighteousness; No one does good.

Tehillah/Psalm 14:1 “The fool has said in his heart, “There is no יהוה.” They have done corruptly, They have done an abominable deed, There is no one who does good.

When people forsake the Torah and lack the wisdom and understanding of ‘how’ we are to serve יהוה, they will inevitably be inclined to follow practices that are foreign to the Torah and are abominable in the eyes of יהוה.

In the process the True service unto יהוה gets forgotten and the false evil practices of the world’s worship systems are adopted as a substitute that is deemed acceptable by man, with no regard for what or how it looks in the eyes of יהוה.

We cannot serve two masters, and so we must be devoted in worship to our Creator and Rock of our deliverance, and make sure that we offer our lives up to hive as a daily living sacrifice, as we render unto Him a slaughter offering of pure praise as we walk in His torah with joy. To neglect His Torah and vainly attempt to worship Him, is nothing more than a slaughtering to demons and not Eloah – the El of oaths!

Wayyiqra/Leviticus 17:7 “And let them no longer slaughter their slaughterings to demons, after whom they whored. This is a law forever for them throughout their generations.

This was a clear command given to a people who had been under the heavy influence of the evil sun-worship practices of Mitsrayim – and so too do we need to recognise this clear command that is given to all generations – no slaughtering to demons or false mighty ones!!!

Sha’ul warns Timotiyos of what will happen in the last days, as many will fall for the false teachings of demons and end up slaughtering to the false systems of worship that are in total opposition to the truth of The Torah and in doing so they will worship their false mighty ones by keeping feasts that are not found in Scripture, while they neglect to heed the clear commands of Wayyiqra/Leviticus 23, which clearly gives us the Appointed Times/Feast Times of our Creator, where we come together at His Table!

Timotiyos Aleph/1 Timothy 4:1 “But the Spirit distinctly says that in latter times some shall fall away from the belief, paying attention to misleading spirits, and teachings of demons

Sha’ul in teaching the Corinthians not to mix their worship, he writes in:

Qorintiyim Aleph/1 Corinthians 10:20-22 “No, but what the gentiles offer they offer to demons and not to Elohim, and I do not wish you to become sharers with demons. 21 You are not able to drink the cup of the Master and the cup of demons, you are not able to partake of the table of the Master and of the table of demons. 22 Do we provoke the Master to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?

He was quoting from Wayyiqra/Leviticus 17:7, and what we must understand very clearly today, is that Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day, or any other day that the church has tried to ‘Christianise’ is nothing more than the table of demons, and is in no way a form of worship that is prescribed unto יהוה – in fact it is strictly forbidden!

We also see how many will refuse to walk in the ways of the Torah and will hold fast to their own tables of demon worship:

Ḥazon/Revelation 9:20And the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship the demons, and idols of gold, and of silver, and of brass, and of stone, and of wood, which are neither able to see, nor to hear, nor to walk.

 

In verse 18 we are told that Ya’aqoḇ neglected the Rock who brought us forth, and the word used here for ‘neglected’ is שָׁיָה shayah – Strong’s H7876 which means, to forget, neglect, neglect to remember. Neglecting to remember – a clear sin of so many today – especially with the one command which we are clearly told to ‘remember’ – The 4th = The Sabbath – “Remember to keep the Sabbath Day….”

To neglect something actually means to give little attention or respect to; and this clearly reveals the fruit and impure motives of so many who give little attention or respect to the Word of Elohim!

 

Diḇre haYamim Aleph/1 Chronicles 16:15Remember His covenant forever, the Word He commanded for a thousand generations

Remember His covenant forever – that is His Word which He has commanded – for a 1000 generations!!! Now to put that into perspective, we know that from Aḏam to Messiah there was 42 generations – which clearly shows that we are in no way close to reaching a 1000 generations – what is being told to us here is that His Covenant and His word is forever – and we must guard all He has commanded!

שָׁיָה shayah (neglect/forget) is the opposite of זָכַר  zaar (remember/remember to keep). Neglect speaks of a laziness to do, whereas to remember speaks of a willingness to do and follow through all that is being asked of you!

We see this word שָׁיָה shayah being used in:

Tehillah/Psalm 44:20-21 “If we have forgotten the Name of our Elohim, or stretched out our hands to a foreign mighty one, 21 would Elohim not search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.

What many fail to neglect to recognise and acknowledge is that יהוה knows the secrets of the heart, and as Yirmeyahu clearly tells us, the heart is deceitful above all, and only יהוה knows it. So many use the pathetic phrase, ‘He knows my heart’, when excusing away their neglect for the clear called for obedience and are in severe danger of being cast out into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!

 

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 51:1 “Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness, seeking יהוה: Look to the rock you were hewn from, and to the hole of the pit you were dug from.

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 17:10-11 “Because you have forgotten the Elohim of your deliverance, and have not remembered the Rock of your stronghold, therefore you shall plant pleasant plants and set out foreign seedlings, 11 by day make your plant to grow, and in the morning make your seed to flourish – but the harvest is a heap in the day of grief and incurable pain.

Verse19-27

This section clearly outlines the judgement of Elohim upon a rebellious people; and while this song was to be remembered as a witness against Yisra’ĕl – they clearly neglected to heed and remember the words of this song, for this song should have been a sobering continual reminder to guard against rebellion that often breeds from familiarity and comfort that is expected rather than received with a thanksgiving!

Here we see very strong language being used, which speak of the consuming fire of the wrath of His jealousy, and the sending forth of the famine, sword and plague that would destroy a backsliding people, leaving only a remnant to survive!

There is always a remnant, for יהוה will always secure His covenants made with Aḇraham, Yitsḥaq  and Ya’aqoḇ; and while He did indeed divorce the northern 10 tribes of Yisra’ĕl and scattered her to the ends of the earth; and sent Yehuḏah (2 southern tribes) into a 70 years exile into Baḇelon; he promises to restore His people and cause them to return, and so it is by the Blood of The Rock -  יהושע Messiah that we are able to be brought near to the Covenants of Promise which we were once far from and without an Elohim in the world! (Eph’siyim/Ephesians 2)

In verse 21 the Hebrew word translated as ‘worthless matters’ is הֶבֶל heḇel – Strong’s H1892 and means, vapour, breath, delusion, emptiness, futility, vanity, idols, worthlessness, and we see this word being used in:

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 2:4-5 “Hear the word of יהוה, O house of Ya’aqoḇ and all the clans of the house of Yisra’ĕl.  5 Thus said יהוה, “What unrighteousness have your fathers found in Me, that they have gone far from Me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless?

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 16:19 “O יהוה, my strength and my stronghold and my refuge, in the day of distress the gentiles shall come to You from the ends of the earth and say, “Our fathers have inherited only falsehood, futility, and there is no value in them.

 In Melaḵim Aleph/1 Kings 16:25-26 we are told that Omri did more evil in the eyes of יהוה than all those before him, by walking in the ways of Yaroḇ’am and provoking יהוה with their worthlessnesses. Another powerful verse I found is spoken by Yonah while he was in the big fish:

Yonah/Jonah 2:8 “Those observing false worthlessnesses forsake their own loving-commitment.

This expresses it very clearly – when you go after worthlessness, idols, vanity and that which does not satisfy, you will be handed over to the delusion of futility and forsake true loving-commitment!!! Provoking יהוה with futility that has no value is still being done today by so many who have not realised the reality of the falsehood that our fathers inherited and have passed down through vain traditions and theologies of man.

In verses 24-25 we are clearly given the judgement of Elohim being poured out by ‘famine, beast and sword’, and are similar words we see in:

Yeḥezqěl/Ezekiel 5:16-17When I send against them the evil arrows of scarcity of food which shall be for their destruction, which I send to destroy you, I shall increase the scarcity of food upon you and cut off your supply of bread. 17 ‘And I shall send against you scarcity of food and evil beasts, and they shall bereave you. And pestilence and blood shall pass through you, while I bring the sword against you. I, יהוה, have spoken.’

 

Verse 28-43

A rebellious people are a people lost to counsel and without understanding – because if they were wise then they would understand all that is written and guard themselves from falling away, as they would, by wisdom of Scripture, consider their latter end! So many today have absolutely no clue as to what is coming, and as a result they are lost to counsel and lack wisdom and understanding.

Ya’aqoḇ/James 1:5-8If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of Elohim, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it shall be given to him. 6 But he should ask in belief, not doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that man should not think that he shall receive whatever from the Master – 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Hoshěa/Hosea 14:9Who is wise and understands these words, discerning and knows them? For the ways of יהוה are straight, and the righteous walk in them, but the transgressors stumble in them.

Tehillah/Psalm 107:43 “Who is wise? Then let him observe these matters! Let them understand the kindnesses of יהוה.

Those who forsake the Torah of Elohim and walk in their own ways, are relying on a false rock – one that will be proven false when the storm of the judgement of Elohim comes rushing in like a consuming fire!

We see here in these verses the clear reference to a false vine and poisoned wine that is drunk by the rebellious, and Sha’ul says in:

Romiyim/Romans 3:11-13 “There is no one who is understanding, there is none who is seeking Elohim. 12 “They all have turned aside, they have together become worthless. There is none who does good, no, not one.” 13 “Their throat is an open tomb, with their tongues they have deceived,” “The poison of adders is under their lips,

When Messiah tells us in Yoḥanan/John 15 that He is the True Vine, then we must recognise that from this statement there is a false vine – one that may look like the real, feel like the real and even produce what looks like the real ‘drink’ of the vine, yet it is false and many have attached themselves to a false vine that has no life, but has become a degenerate vine, due to the lack of obedience to the commands of Elohim!

The vine of the wicked and rebellious is of the vine of Seḏom and is like the fields of Amorah – now we know how Seḏom and Amorah was destroyed by fire, and only righteous Lot escaped with his two daughters. Seḏom and Amorah pictures for us the sick depravity of man and the ardent list for the flesh which refuses to yield to the Torah, which is spiritual!

Those who drink of the poison of the vine of lawlessness and continue to do so will have a very bitter end – for the cup of whoring is being consumed by the gallons today, as many run to and fro looking for an ear tickler that will preach to them what they want to hear, while shutting their ears to the Truth and the call to ‘come out of her’ – the wicked whore and her corrupt worship system that has caused many to be mesmerised by as she keeps them drunk in the pleasures of their flesh and self-righteous justification for their wilful choice to walk contrary to the Torah!

Tehillah/Psalm 140:1-3 “Rescue me, O יהוה, from men of evil; Preserve me from men of violence, 2 who have devised evils in their hearts; they stir up conflicts all day long. 3 They sharpen their tongues like a snake; the poison of cobras is under their lips. Selah.

In the outpouring of His wrath יהוה makes a clear statement that there is no Elohim besides Him and there is no other Rock on which to stand – and He rightly rules His people, extending great compassion to those who are His and who call upon His Name! Those who continue to follow an inherited falsehood will one day be asked to call upon their so called ‘mighty one’ to see if he will help them in the day of distress.

Shophetim/Judges 10:13-16 “But you, you have forsaken Me and served other mighty ones. Therefore I do not save you again. 14 “Go and cry out to the mighty ones which you have chosen, let them save you in your time of distress.” 15 And the children of Yisra’ĕl said to יהוה, “We have sinned! Do to us whatever is good in Your eyes, only deliver us today, please.” 16 So they put away the foreign mighty ones from their midst and served יהוה. And His being was grieved with the trouble of Yisra’ĕl.

A clear call continues to go out – choose this day who you will serve – just like it did when Eliyahu faced the prophets of Ba’al and Izeḇel – and what we are to proclaim to a multitude of lost people, is that there is only One Elohim and His Name is NOT ‘lord’ or ‘god’ or ‘jesus’ – His Name is יהוה (Yahweh); and יהושע (Yahushua) means – יהוה is our Saviour!

In Shemoth/Exodus 20:5 יהוה makes it clear that He will repay those who hate Him. The word used here for ‘hate’ is שָׂנֵא sane/saney – Strong’s H8130 and means, to hate, detest, enmity, foes, turn against, unloved

Tehillah/Psalm 11:5 “יהוה tries the righteous, but His being shall hate the wrong and the one who loves violence.

To hate in Hebrew, on the part of the unrighteous and rebellious, signifies a total disregard for the Torah of Elohim. In Tehillah/Psalm 50:17 which we have already quoted in this portion’s commentary, we see that those who ‘hate’ the instructions of Elohim and cast their words behind them are warned not to assume to take up the Covenant upon their lips!

To hate something is to show no allegiance to it – so we can that he who hates the evil way, means that he refuses to walk in the evil paths of the wicked and lawless:

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 8:13The fear of יהוה is to hate evil. I have hated pride and arrogance, and the evil way, and the perverse mouth.

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 6:16-19These six matters יהוה hates, and seven are an abomination to Him: 17 a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands shedding innocent blood, 18 a heart devising wicked schemes, feet quick to run to evil, 19 a false witness breathing out lies, and one who causes strife among brothers.

To hate יהוה is to refuse to walk in His commands – for hate is the complete opposite to love, and we know that love for Elohim is clearly described for us in:

Yoḥanan Aleph/1 John 5:3For this is the love for Elohim, that we guard His commands, and His commands are not heavy

יהוה makes it very clear for us in His Word as He draws a very clear line for us: the one who does not love Him with all his heart is actually counted among those who hate Him!!! He does not want anyone lukewarm – for these He will vomit out of His mouth:

Ḥazon/Revelation 3:16So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am going to vomit you out of My mouth.

Many today ‘claim’ to love Elohim, yet they do not even know His Name; and they do not guard His commands and refuse to keep the True Feasts and Sabbaths of יהוה – clearly showing that they offer only a vain lip service and reveal that they actually hate Him – and they will be repaid for their rebellion and hatred expressed through their disobedience, and their choice to rather be aligned with the twisted and crooked traditions of man!

While יהוה may use nations as a means of discipline, such as the Assyrians, Baḇelonians  or any other He may choose; He clearly states that He will repay them for the blood that is slain by them and He will devour even those He used as instruments to discipline His called out people, in order to cause them to return to their first love!

In the parable of the talents Messiah tells us in:

Luqas/Luke 19:27 “But those enemies of mine who did not wish me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.’

Anyone who will not submit to the rule and authority of יהושע, our Rock and King, which is clearly outlines in the Torah,  will be slain by His flashing sword!

Verse 35 is very clear – Vengeance is יהוה’s!!! The Hebrew word for ‘vengeance’ is the noun נָקָם naqam – Strong’s H5359 and is from the primitive root verb נָקַם naqam – Strong’s H5358 which means, to avenge, take vengeance, execute punishment, take revenge. The first time we see this word being used in Scripture is in:

Wayyiqra/Leviticus 26:25 “And I shall bring against you a sword executing the vengeance of My covenant, and you shall gather together in your cities, and I shall send pestilence among you, and you shall be given into the hand of the enemy.

These words were given to Yisra’ĕl as a warning about what would happen if they do not obey יהוה and do His commands. The sword of His vengeance would come upon Yisra’ĕl if they rejected His laws, loath His right-rulings and reject His Covenant! In order words יהוה would take revenge on those who reject Him and His Word!

This is a very sobering reality and warning to us today, as we recognise our need to Hear, Guard and Do His commands and walk in the Way of Set-Apartness.

When we do obey His commands and stay on the Way of Set-Apartness, not turning to the left or right, but fixing our eyes upon our Elohim, and run with perseverance the race set before us, this coming vengeance of Elohim is a strengthening comfort for us, the set-apart ones of the Most High! יהושע Messiah tells us that we are blessed when we are persecuted for righteousness sake – that is we are blessed when we are persecuted and ridiculed and slandered and hated for walking the Way of Set-Apartness. While this may not always feel blessed, and our natural fleshly response to any persecution, slander or hatred is often one of a desired revenge that we would like to execute personally, we need to recognise that vengeance is not ours – it belongs to Elohim!

Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 32:35Vengeance is Mine, and repayment, at the time their foot slips; for near is the day of their calamity, and the matters prepared are hastening to them.

Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 32:41If I have sharpened My flashing sword, and My hand takes hold on judgment, I shall return vengeance to My enemies, and repay those who hate Me.

The term ‘vengeance’, according to the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, means the following:

Punishment inflicted, in relation to an injury or offense”. It also means that it is done with great force, or done on an extreme and excessive degree! As we consider this, we can understand with what great and excessive force the punishment of Elohim is coming upon those who have ‘injured’ His Torah and walked contrary to His commands!

We, as the body of Messiah, have no right to execute His vengeance – a vengeance that He alone will bring with excessive and extreme force – for His jealousy for His Bride shall cause Him to come with great force and repay the enemies of His Bride and His Covenant!

After Shimshon had been captured by the Philistines and had his eyes plucked out, they called for Shimshon to entertain them, and before he took hold of the two middle columns he prayed to יהוה and asked that יהוה strengthen him to take vengeance upon the Philistines, as we see in:

Shophetim/Judges 16:28 “And Shimshon called to יהוה, saying, “O Master יהוה, remember me, I pray! Strengthen me, I pray, only this time, O Elohim, and let me avenge myself on the Philistines with vengeance for my two eyes!

He killed more Philistines at his death than those he killed in his life! This is a picture of the excessive and great vengeance of Elohim that is coming on the wicked!

Tehillah/Psalm 58:10-11 “The righteous rejoices when he has seen the vengeance, he washes his feet in the blood of the wrong, 11 and man says, “Truly, the righteous are rewarded; truly, there is an Elohim judging in the earth.

The righteous shall rejoice when they see the vengeance of Elohim!!!

In speaking of the day of יהוה, we see in:

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 34:8 “For it is the day of the vengeance of יהוה, the year of recompense for the cause of Tsiyon.

When יהוה saw that there was no man, nor any intercessor, His own Arm saved for Him and we are told in:

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 59:17 “And He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of deliverance on His head. And He put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and wrapped Himself with ardour as a mantle.

He shall put on ‘garments of vengeance’ – He is coming in intense wrath to repay His enemies for all their wickedness and rebellion to His Word!

His vengeance shall be proclaimed!

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 61:2 “to proclaim the acceptable year of יהוה, and the day of vengeance of our Elohim, to comfort all who mourn

When יהושע Messiah stood up in the Assembly and read from the scroll of Yeshayahu/Isaiah He read part of this verse and then rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all the congregants were fixed on Him!!! He read Yeshayahu/Isaiah 61:1 and half of this verse 2, and stopped before reading, “… and the day of vengeance of our Elohim…”, for the vengeance of Elohim is not until יהושע Messiah returns again. He did proclaim a release, and those who knew Yeshayahu would have known this passage very well, and at these words their eyes were fixed on the One who is once again coming in vengeance – and to those who are in Him this is good news, while to those who are not, it is not! Some were astonished at His words, while others scoffed at them!

The Word of יהוה to a rebellious people who refuse to obey Him, through the prophet Miḵah are also very clear:

Miḵah/Micah 5:15And I shall take vengeance in wrath and rage on the gentiles who did not obey.

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 35:4 “Say to those with anxious heart, “Be strong, do not fear! See, your Elohim comes with vengeance, with the recompense of Elohim. He is coming to save you.

The Hebrew word translated here in Yeshayahu/Isaiah 35:4 for ‘vengeance’ is the noun נָקָם naqam – Strong’s H5359, and the Hebrew word translated as ‘recompense’ is גְּמוּל gemul – Strong’s H1576 which means, a dealing, recompense, benefit, what is deserved, and comes from the root verb גָּמַל gamal – Strong’s H1580 meaning, to deal fully or adequately with, to deal out to, wean, compensate, repay.

In the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, the word ‘recompense’, as a noun, means:

“An equivalent or return for something done, suffered or given” and as a verb it means, “to pay for, or to give by way of compensation (as for a service rendered or for damage incurred)”. In other words this term can have both a positive and a negative meaning to it when understanding the recompense of our Elohim – depending on which path you are walking on! For those who walk in the way of set-apartness, we recognise that our reward is with Him, and we shall receive our just inheritance and reward for our faithful obedience of walking steadfast in Him; while those who walk contrary to His way of set-apartness, and walk in their own ways, He is coming to give them what is due for their disobedience!!!

Tehillah/Psalm 103:2 “Bless יהוה, O my being, and do not forget all His dealings

The Hebrew word translated here as ‘dealings’ is גְּמוּל gemul – the word we have just looked at that means ‘recompense’. In other words we must not forget that with which יהוה is coming, for then we shall be prepared for His dealings that He is bringing!

In reference to the clear call to come out of man-made traditions and twisted theologies, we see in:

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 51:6 “Flee from the midst of Baḇel, and let each one save his life! Do not be cut off in her crookedness, for this is the time of the vengeance of יהוה, the recompense He is repaying her.

In this verse we have both of the words we see in Yeshayahu/Isaiah 35:4נָקָם naqam (vengeance) and גְּמוּל gemul (recompense). Only here in Yirmeyahu the Hebrew word for ‘vengeance’ is נְקָמָה neqamah – Strong’s H5360 which is the feminine of נָקָם naqam.

Once again we see in this call to ‘COME OUT BAḆEL, that the clear message of the vengeance and recompense of Elohim that is coming is being proclaimed – for this is the message that will strengthen the weak and anxious to come out of and flee from twisted traditions and dogmas of man!!!

This is the same language we see being used in:

Ḥazon/Revelation 18:4And I heard another voice from the heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues.

The call to come out of the perversions and not to get caught up in the corruption of inherited lies comes with the clear warning of an intense vengeance and recompense of our Elohim that is coming!

Iḇ’rim/Hebrews 10:30-31For we know Him who has said, “Vengeance is Mine, I shall repay, says יהוה.” And again, “יהוה shall judge His people.” 31 It is fearsome to fall into the hands of the living Elohim.”

We must also learn to leave the vengeance to יהוה!!!

Romiyim/Romans 12:17-21 “Repay no one evil for evil. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. 18 If possible, on your part, be at peace with all men. 19 Beloved, do not revenge yourselves, but give place to the wrath, for it has been written, “Vengeance is Mine, I shall repay,” says יהוה. 20 “Instead, if your enemy hungers, feed him; if he thirsts, give him a drink, for in so doing you shall heap coals of fire on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

 

Verse 39 – There is NO Elohim besides יהוה!!! He alone is our Elohim and He puts to death and makes alive, He wounds and heals!!! יהוה our Elohim is One!

There is no Rock like our Elohim:

Shemuʼěl Aleph/1 Samuel 2:2 There is no one set-apart like יהוה, for there is no one besides You, and there is no rock like our Elohim.

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 44:8 “Do not fear, nor be afraid. Have I not since made you hear, and declared it? You are My witnesses. Is there an Eloah besides Me? There is no other Rock, I know not one.’

Verse 45-47

Mosheh came with Hoshěa, son of Nun, and spoke all the words of this song to all Yisra’ĕl – what is interesting to take note of here is that the name Hoshěa is used and not Yehoshua; and we may also recognise at this point that Yehoshua is writing down this record; and in humility does not dare to call himself יהוה’s salvation until his resolve is tested, and so he shows respect toward his teacher (Mosheh) who gave him that name. While Yehoshua’s name is not used here, we can confidently call upon the True Saviour, Rock and Deliverer of Yisra’ĕlיהושע Messiah – for in Him we have a sure and promised hope of deliverance to come!

After speaking the words of the song, Mosheh further encouraged all Yisra’ĕl to set their hearts on these words of warning and command their children to guard the words of the Torah – for the Torah is not a worthless word – it is our life!!!

The Hebrew root word used for ‘set’ is שִׂים siym – Strong’s H7760 also with the meaning, set, ordain, establish, direct, appoint and so we see here in the command to ‘set’ their hearts on all these words of warning, we can see that Mosheh was making it very clear that they must allow their hearts to be directed by these words and let these words be established in their heart, so that they would not falter in their walk of obedience! This word can also render the understanding of setting something down in a fixed place – in other words they were not to let their hearts be moved by the temptation to rebel – and these words would help them to do that!

The word used for ‘command’ is צָוָה tsavah – Strong’s H6680 meaning, to lay charge (upon), give charge (to),  command, order, appoint, commission. They were to ‘command’ their children – order them – to guard to do all the words of the Torah!

The word used for ‘guard’ is שָׁמַר shamar – Strong’s H8104 means, ‘keep, watch, present, attend to, pay close attention, guard’ and the basic idea of the root of this word is ‘to exercise great care over’.  We are to exercise great care over His Torah! When used in combination with other verbs the meaning is ‘do carefully or diligently’, i.e. perform carefully by paying strict attention as to what must be done as it expresses the careful attention to be paid to the obligations of a covenant, to laws, statutes, etc.  Another aspect of this word carries the meaning of having to guard carefully and tend to or ‘take care of’. When one takes care of a valued possession then the utmost diligence is exercised in ensuring that it is protected at all costs and it is taken care of through the correct maintenance and observance of its functional requirements to keep it in tact; and as it is with the Torah – we must guard it in our hearts and exercise it diligently, keeping ourselves free from the clutter or weeds of wickedness. Aḏam was commanded to ‘guard’ (Shamar) the garden which carried with it great responsibility and the need to be watchful and at work; and we are to guard the good deposit in the soil of our hearts as we do all that we are commanded, nurturing the very growth that the Good Seed of His Living Word produces in our lives!

We do not learn for nothing – we learn and are taught to guard - TO DO! The word for ‘to do’ is from the Hebrew word  עָשָׂה asah – Strong’s H6213 meaning, to do, work, make, produce, ta act with effect, to observe, to bring about, institute and can also mean, celebrate, which I think is very fitting. As it is truly a great ‘joy’ TO DO the laws and right-rulings as prescribed! So many today think that it is a huge burden to do what is commanded, yet that is so far from the truth – when we diligently observe and guard to do all He commands us to do – it is a great joy and a delight and not heavy at all! The perfect Torah of freedom is like a mirror for us – and in looking intently into it we are able to see if we are in fact listening and doing or not:

Ya’aqoḇ/James 1:22-25And become doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 Because if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror, 24 for he looks at himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what he was like. 25 But he that looked into the perfect Torah, that of freedom, and continues in it, not becoming a hearer that forgets, but a doer of work, this one shall be blessed in his doing of the Torah.

We ‘guard to do’ all He commands in order that we may live and take possession of that which יהוה has planned for us.

Guarding without doing is not true guarding!!! Doing without guarding cannot be done correctly and will only result in a manufactured attempt at worship!

The Torah is NOT ‘worthless’, and the word for ‘worthless’ is רֵק req – Strong’s H7386 which means, empty, vain, foolish, worthless’.  The Torah is certainly not ‘empty’ or ‘vain’ – far from it – it is our ‘life’!!!

The word for life is - חַי ḥay – Strong’s H2416 and means, life, alive, living, flowing, fresh, running’.

What we must guard against is the looking to the ‘letter of the Torah’ only; as we must recognise that the Torah without Messiah contains no life – but it is only in Messiah that true life of the Torah becomes something that can and does sustain us.

Tehillah/Psalm 36:9 “For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.

The Hebrew word for fountain is -מָקוֹר  maqor – Strong’s H4726 meaning, a spring, fountain and comes from the root - קוּר qur – Strong’s H6979 which means, to dig and we know we are to dig and seek out His kingdom and His righteousness – the question is whether people have found the True well of LIFE and are sitting and learning at it or is it a muddied counterfeit?

With יהוה is the FOUNTAIN OF LIFE!!!

Tehillah/Psalm 68:6 “Bless Elohim in the assemblies, יהוה, from the fountain of Yisra’ĕl.

When we come to the FOUNTAIN OF LIFE and gather when we should, as an obedient flock who know His voice, then that Water of Life becomes a fountain in us as our lives are changed and our speech is renewed enabling us to bring life and healing to the nations!

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 10:11The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but violence covers the mouth of the wrong.

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 13:14The Torah of the wise is a fountain of life, turning one away from the snares of death.

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 14:27The fear of יהוה is a fountain of life, to turn away from the snares of death.

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 16:22Understanding is a fountain of life to him who has it, But the disciplining of fools is folly.

יהושע is The Living Torah and our source of Life, or rather He is the Life of the Torah - and when we drink of Him – the FOUNTAIN OF LIFE begins to flow out of us as we gain understanding, and walk in the fear of יהוה by walking in the Torah, and our speech becomes a flowing source of life!!!

In the ancient pictographic symbols of this word, we are given a greater insight in understanding how יהושע Messiah is THE LIFE! This word - חַי ḥay in the ancient script look like this:

The ancient script has this letter as chet which is a tent wall’, and carries a meaning of separation’, as a tent wall separates two halves of the tent; or it can also reflect the outside walls that separate the people inside from that which is outside and so can also symbolise protection and security to those inside, while picturing a cutting off of those who are outside. Hence this letter can mean ‘established, secure’ as well as ‘cut off, separated from’. As a tent wall we are also able to recognise the picture of stones being built up to make a complete wall.

Yod – י

The ancient script has this letter as yad which is ‘an arm and hand’ and carries the meaning of ‘work, make, throw’, from the primary functions of the arm and hand, and it also represents worship or giving thanks in the extending of hands as a gesture of this. The work of one’s hands is the basic meaning of this letter!

From this ancient pictographic lettering of the word for LIFE we are clearly able to see how by the work of Messiah – the outstretched arm and hand of Elohim, we as living stones, are built up in Him as the Dwelling Place of the Living Elohim!

What gives us our ability to be built up as living stones in the Master, is our continued obedience to walking in that which is our life – His Torah!

Ḥazon/Revelation 21:6And He said to me, “It is done! I am the ‘Aleph’ and the ‘Taw’, the Beginning and the End. To the one who thirsts I shall give of the fountain of the water of life without payment.

When we remain in Him as continually drink of His Living Water as we keep rank and gather at the Appointed Times and are nourished and refreshed by the Living Water of His Word we too become a deep source of His wisdom as His Word becomes an everlasting stream:

Mishlĕ/Proverbs 18:4The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a flowing stream.

If we forsake Him and allow His water to become muddied then He will dry up the fountain; and we see this clear prophetic warning given in Hoshěa when the crookedness of Ephrayim is being rebuked:

Hoshěa/Hosea 13:15 “Though he bears fruit among his brothers, an east wind comes, a wind from יהוה comes up from the wilderness, and it dries up his fountain, and his spring becomes dry – it plunders a treasure of all desirable objects. 16 “Shomeron is held guilty, for she has rebelled against her Elohim – they fall by the sword, their infants are dashed in pieces, and their pregnant women ripped open.

A dried up fountain for rebellion - and that was what Shomeron was guilty of, and at Sheḵem יהושע comes to bring a call of restoration restore a lost Bride at Shomeron and in effect He ‘opened the fountain’ so to speak as a prophetic shadow picture of what was to come!

Zeḵaryah/Zechariah 13:1In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of Dawiḏ  and for the inhabitants of Yerushalayim, for sin and for uncleanness.

 This ‘fountain’ being spoken of here is a reference to a flow of blood in a woman during her monthly cycle or after childbirth, but also it is speaking of a wellspring that gushes out when opened up. And in the context of the previous chapter it relates to the piercing of יהושע (Zeḵaryah/Zechariah 12:10 – where they will look on Him whom they have pierced!), after which blood and water flowed from His side (Yoḥanan/John 19:34), as it relates to the purification and cleansing of Yisra’ĕl from her uncleanness, as the FOUNTAIN OF LIFE brings forth the LIVING WATERS that heal, restore and cleanse a lost and broken Bride!

This woman at the well responded with great zeal and caused a great many to believe by her testimony of יהושע – the Great I AM! This encounter with the Messiah changed her life and she had great Living Waters flow from within as she drank from the FOUNTAIN OF LIFE! Here standing before her was the Husband of Yisra’ĕl, which at first she did not recognise, until He revealed who He was and she responded the way we ought to be – she went and caused many to believe in Him!

The harvest is ripe – we cannot say ‘still another 4 months’ - the harvest is ripe and we are to be like this woman who, by drinking of the True FOUNTAIN OF LIFE let others taste of the LIVING WATER that flowed from within her as she held to the testimony of Messiah, firmly believing His Word and guarding it in action:

Ḥazon/Revelation 14:12Here is the endurance of the set-apart ones, here are those guarding the commands of Elohim and the belief of יהושע.

Verse 49 – 52

Mosheh is told to go up the mountain of the Aḇram, Mount Neḇo and die, because he and Aharon did not listen to the instruction to speak to the rock at the waters of Meriḇah Qaḏĕsh, but rather he got angry with the people and struck the rock!

He was permitted to see the land from afar but not enter in; and this speaks a clear and powerful message today of how the Torah trains us unto Messiah – our King who shall lead us and take us into our inheritance; and we can also learn from the account of Mosheh being told to die – and that is that we should control our anger and do not let our anger cause us to sin; for to sin and be lawless is to ‘strike’ Messiah – that Rock in the Wilderness over and over!

He got to see the regions beyond the Yardĕn! This carries wonderful significance for us in that the Torah points us to Messiah and leads us to the Promises of the Covenants we were once far off from but now through יהושע Messiah have been brought near. It is obedience to the Torah (instructions of Elohim) that we will truly enter in to the Promises of יהוה.

Yoḥanan/John 1:17for the Torah was given through Mosheh – the favour and the truth came through יהושע Messiah.

The Torah is the instructions of Elohim and this above verse can be better explained as:

The instructions of Elohim, for His set-apart people, was given through Mosheh and revealed by the life, death and resurrection of the Messiah! Torah is truth and is not opposed to the favour/grace of Elohim – Truth came through Mosheh and favour and Truth came through Messiah!

נְבוֹ Neḇo – Strong’s H5015 means, prophet and Neḇo was also a Baḇelonian deity who presided over learning and letters, and corresponds to the Greek deity of interpretation, Hermes from which the subject of ‘hermeneutics’ comes from, which is the study of the interpretation of written texts.

Sadly we see today so many falsified interpretations of the Scriptures that has simply ‘concealed the two cakes’ – that is through erroneous Greek interpretation of Scripture, there has been taught a wilful disregard for the Torah and as this also can give reference to ‘fig cakes’ I am reminded of the passage in Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 24 with regards to the vision of the two baskets of figs, one good and one bad – one ripe and one rotten. The good figs are those who were obedient and listened while the bad figs were the disobedient. Which basket are you in? The one who listens and obeys the True “Prophet” from Elohim:

Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 18:15 ““יהוה your Elohim shall raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brothers. Listen to Him

Or the one who listens to the many false prophets:

Mattithyahu/Matthew 7:15 “But beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are savage wolves.

We shall know them by their fruits!!! Those who are ‘concealing’ the Torah are false!

Mosheh knew this day would come, for he was told at the waters of Meriḇah that he would not enter in, yet he remained faithful in leading Yisra’ĕl to this point, and now it was their responsibility to take heed of all his words and continue to walk in them in order that they live long.

Verse 51 teaches us a very vital lesson, and that is that our trespasses can keep us from being allowed to enter in to the Reign of Elohim! The Hebrew root word for ‘trespassed’ is מָעַל ma’al – Strong’s H4603 and means, to act unfaithfully or treacherously, violate, break faith’.

What is interesting to take note of here is our need to be clothed, or robed, in righteousness as we hear, guard and do the clear Torah of Elohim, and it is worth noting that the Hebrew word for ‘robe’ is מְעִיל meil – Strong’s H4598 – ‘robe, mantle, cloak, i.e., an exterior garment which covers an inner tunic; and can also be described as a ‘sleeveless coat’’.

This word in the Hebrew for ‘robe’ has a very powerful lesson for us in terms of what we are discussing here, in that we are to be robed in true garments of righteousness and walk in them!

What is interesting to note is that this word comes from the root word מָעַל ma’al – Strong’s H4603.

This is what got me digging a little deeper and then it struck me as I looked at the difference between these two words, and that is that the word for robe, which would picture for us robes of obedience, has one more letter than the word that renders one acting corruptly or being unfaithful. And so when we look at these words in the ancient script we see a clear picture and message being given that we also see being portrayed in the difference between Shemuʼěl and the two sons of Ĕli.

Let us look at these two words in the ancient script:

1 -  מָעַל  ma‘al – treacherous, wicked, unfaithful:

mem  -     the letter ‘mem’ – מְ – which in the early script is pictured as ‘water’, also carries the meaning of chaos (from the storms of the sea) and can picture that which is mighty or massive as well as the unknown

ayin -         the letter ‘ayin’  - עַ – which in the early script is pictured as an ‘eye’, and can carry the meaning of paying attention, to take heed, keep a close eye on, as well as something that ‘covers’

lamed    -          the letter ‘lamed’ – ל – which in the early script is pictured as a ‘shepherd’s staff’, can give the meaning of ‘to or toward’ and can represent that which pushes or pulls a flock in a direction, and can speak of authority  or a yoke that is used to lead and guide

2 - מְעִיל  me‘il – robe:

The difference as you can see is the additional letter:

yad-       the letter ‘yad’ – י – which in the ancient script is pictured as ‘arm and hand’, and the meaning of this letter is work, make, throw – the functions of the hand and arm and well as the gestures of the hand – ‘thanksgiving’.

Now when we understand the meaning behind these individual letters we see what makes the difference between serving faithfully and being unfaithful or corrupt in service. The difference between the two words we are looking at is the picture of a hand or arm and hand.

And so when we look at the word for robe, we can see the clear message of how יהוה, out of the chaos of the waters, set His order in place through His instructions. Man sinned and was naked and exposed and יהוה saw how man needed a covering, which He sent through the work of His Outstretched Arm and Right Hand - יהושע Messiah in order to redeem us back under His Rod of instructions, being forever robed in righteousness!

Without the true covering our works will be exposed for their wickedness! The covering that makes the difference between a true robe and that which is false and wicked is the Outstretched Hand of יהוה.

When you take away the hand – there is no salvation and it is just a works based wickedness and treacherous service being delivered, that is abominable before יהוה. The removal of the commands of Elohim and the idea of the false teachings that the Torah is no longer applicable is a removal of the Hand and Arm of יהוה.

The robe that Shemuʼěl wore each year is a picture of us having been clothed in the robes of righteousness as we walk in the Torah and we follow the Creators cycle each year, starting with every Shabbat! Any other attempts at worship that do not follow His clear instructions, are nothing more than man-made traditions and rules that have removed the Hand of יהוה!

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 61:10 “I greatly rejoice in יהוה, my being exults in my Elohim. For He has put garments of deliverance on me, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

When Dawiḏ brought back the Ark of Elohim we are told that not only did Dawiḏ wear a robe of fine line but so did the Lěwites:

Diḇre haYamim Aleph/1 Chronicles 15:27And Dawiḏ was dressed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Lěwites who bore the ark, the singers, and Kenanyah the leader of the service with the singers. And Dawiḏ wore a linen shoulder garment.

Our robes of righteousness are clearly defined for us – and that is to guard to do all His commands:

Deḇarim/Deuteronomy 6:25And it is righteousness for us when we guard to do all this command before יהוה our Elohim, as He has commanded us.

Yoḥanan Aleph 2:29If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone doing righteousness has been born of Him.

Yoḥanan Aleph 3:7Little children, let no one lead you astray. The one doing righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.

Yoḥanan Aleph 3:10In this the children of Elohim and the children of the devil are manifest: Everyone not doing righteousness is not of Elohim, neither the one not loving his brother.

Ḥazon/Revelation 7:13-14And one of the elders responded, saying to me, “Who are these dressed in white robes, and where did they come from?” 14 And I said to him, “Master, you know.” And he said to me, “These are those coming out of the great distress, having washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Ḥazon/Revelation 19:8And to her it was given to be dressed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteousnesses of the set-apart ones.

When Messiah ascended to heaven, He left us His very clear instructions, as He brought to us the very life of what it means to walk in the Torah and it is up to us to guard to follow His commands in order that we live long and inherit that which has been promised to those who overcome!

In summary – this Torah portion is called הַאֲזִינוּ – ‘ha’azinu’ – rendering the phrase ‘give ear’ and so may we learn to ‘give ear’ to the Words of our Master and do all we ‘hear’ Him telling us to do, through His living Word that teaches, reproves, warns, instructs and trains us in righteousness!

He who has ears let them hear…!
